Please Developers...Stop Removing Our Multi Player Seasons!!
Posted on November 24, 2013 at 03:32 AM.
Every year in each of the major team sports titles we go through this same thing. A big debate about whether its fun to control every team in your league or not. There actually is no correct answer. Because everyone has their own way of enjoying sports titles.

But the fact that so many people still get in these forums and scream about it should tell all the game developers something. And that something is this:

Yes!! There are a LOT of sports gamers who enjoy controlling the entire league for lots of reasons. And not all of us like playing online. Offline, multi player full control is still VERY VERY popular.

Let me say this first....this is not a knock on anybody else who plays differently. Because I know someone is gonna comment about how it's cheating, it's no fun, blah blah blah or whatever. But that's a matter of opinion. Because not everybody wants to pretend to be a GM, coach, or player.

Some of us just wanna play our own league. Period. And enjoy the heck out of it playing as NO team in particular.

So why on earth do we keep going through this every few years with our sports titles?

Madden NFL
For so many years it was the last thing we had to worry about. Madden always allowed you to do whatever you wanted with your season. Then last year EA decided everyone needed to either be a coach or a player. So they introduced a new mode called Connected Careers where you could only control and play as one team. The Madden community forums blew up all over the web. And thankfully, 32-team control is back this year in Madden 25. But one can't help but wonder.....who's bright idea was it to limit gamers to single-player coach or player anyway? Why would we want less in 2012 than we had in like....1995???

NBA 2K
Early on, NBA 2K allowed eight users within a season mode. Then they finally moved up to full 30-users. So we thought we were in the clear. Then.....we get news that the first next-gen version of NBA 2K14 doesn't allow multi users in Association mode. I'm not sure if it also applies to season mode. But with all that power this should not even be a discussion.

MLB The Show
I remember when I first saw how dynamite this game was years ago. Then I found out at that time that season mode was single-player one team control. But after lots of requests, Sony has since added full 30-team control and hasn't looked back. Hopefully they won't for next-gen either.

NCAA Football
Yeah I know, its gone. So it shouldn't matter. But dynasty mode in this game allows only 12 users. But the cool thing is you can still play any game you want in your dynasty. So the fun factor is still there. Besides, we can't expect a 126-user season mode right? C'mon!!

NHL
Again, another game that started out with it and then took it out. I had to settle for NHL 2K for a year or 2 before they finally put it back. They haven't removed it since. I only hope they learned from all the feedback years ago.

FIFA
And now for the heartbreaking reason I'm writing this blog in the first place. The first FIFA game I purchased, I did so not knowing that there was no season mode. Career mode is a single-player, one team mode. So I tried tournament mode and liked it. Problem was...only 8 users were allowed. Which is better than one. But in most leagues there are like 20 teams. So I still couldn't play whatever game I wanted to play. Then they changed it to allow up to 64 users (I think. But its a lot). And for the last few years FIFA has been my most fun sports game; playing Premier League soccer. So I couldn't wait to get my hands on a PS4.

And then tonight I learned the devastating news that EA has removed the tournament mode from FIFA 14 next gen. They say the data doesn't show it to be a popular mode. But how would they REALLY know? Most people that would play that mode probably don't do so online.

I know....people who like trying to lead their "one team" to the championship don't understand. That's fine. But there are lots of gamers who like to control all the roster moves, play all the biggest games, watch cpu vs cpu, or play season mode getting together with friends or even your kids.

Simply put, we are way too far into the future, with way too much power to be taking steps backwards. Gamers who shell out 60 bucks should be able to enjoy any sports game in whatever fashion they like. There is definitely an audience for this!

So here's to EA Sports, Sony, 2K Sports, and anybody else on the horizon......

Can you please not stop taking away our full league, multi user controlled seasons?? Pretty please with cheese.

Once and for all....
