Halftime, Post-game, and Weekly shows in video games
Posted on December 14, 2008 at 03:44 PM.
I don't know what ever happened to the idea. But I still remember it like yesterday. This was several years ago, about a year before Playstation 2 came out. Not 3... 2!!!!

I read in several magazines and even saw screenshots of how they were going to take Madden and other sports games to a whole new level...off the field. I saw some shots of the Fox studio set and the whole works. The article was saying how we were going to see something very similar to what we see on Sundays at halftime of our games. Needless to say, that never happened. (And yes the interview was with EA people too)

OK, maybe once they got into the PS2 system they realized those things wouldn't be possible after all. That's cool. BUTTTTT.......several years later (2004 to be exact), somebody figured it out. ESPN NFL 2K5 had the coolest thing with Chris Berman in-studio before the game. Then he'd come back at halftime and break down the first half, one big play at a time...in order...with highlights. Same for post-game.

Then to make things even better, they had a full blown SportsCenter that you could watch each week in your season. They had scores AND highlights, standings, injury news, milestones, and next weeks' key match-ups. MAN DID THIS MAKE YOUR NFL SEASON EXPIERIENCE FUN AND COMPLETE. Now keep in mind...I'm talking Playstation....TWO!!!!

Now on to the future, or maybe I should say present. Now that we have these dynamic systems in PS3 and 360, I don't think I'm alone in being highly disappointed that this has only been used in ONE game. That being College Hoops 2K. They had the College Hoops Tonight with Greg Gumbel and Clark Kellogg. And it was nice. Very in-depth. Also during games: pre-game, halftime with break-down, and post-game with "so-long from our studio" and all that extra stuff.

I see people requesting it on wishlists for EVERY sports game, every year. So there's no doubt there's a lot of gamers interested in the media/entertainment/off-field part of sports.

I just hope some-one's listening.

To my favorites: EA, 2K, Sony......Nudge!
