Georgia St. kicked field goals as time expired at the end of the half and the game to hold off a charging FCS East team 27-24.
Georgia St. went up early on a 3 yard strike from QB Ben McLane to TE Drew Pearson. The 10 play, 85 yard drive was nearly perfect, as they faced only 1 third down on the drive.
FCS East responded with a long drive of their own, driving the ball quickly into Georgia State’s side of the field before it ultimately stalled at the 35 yard line.
A perfect coffin corner punt gave Georgia St. possession at their own 2 yard line, and nearly gave up a safety on the first play of the drive when HB Gerald Howse barely escaped the end zone on an inside handoff.
The 3 and out put FCS East in great field position starting at Georgia State’s 26 yard line. QB #7 quickly scored on a QB draw from 5 yards out to tie the game at 7.
On the first play of the ensuing drive, TE Drew Pearson struck again on a 41 yard corner route that immediately put Georgia St. inside FCS E territory, but the drive would go no further and Georgia St. was forced to punt.
A quick 3 and out ended the first quarter and gave Georgia St. the ball back at FCS East’s 44 yard line. An 8 play drive ensued, capped off by a 1 yard TD run by HB Travis Evans to give Georgia St. a 14-7 lead.
Special teams again let down Georgia St. as a 53 yard return on the ensuing kickoff gave FCS East possession inside Georgia St. territory. An 8 play, 44 yard drive tied the score at 14, halfway through the 2nd quarter.
After a punt, FCS would attack again with 2 option plays and 2 passes by QB J. Wilson picking up 43 yards. The drive would stall at Georgia State’s 8 yard line and result in a FCS East FG with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
Not to be outdone, Georgia St ran a 2 minute drill of their own, picking up 52 yards on 4/5 passing from QB Ben McLane before tying the score at 17 as time expired in the first half.
It appeared FCS East might take the lead in the third quarter, but a 44 yard field goal missed wide right.
Georgia St. capitalized on the miscue as it only took 3 plays to take a 24-17 lead. A 39 yards TD strike to a wide open TE Drew Pearson gave Georgia St. the lead.
The score would remain that way until FCS East tied the game at 24 on a 4 yard pass to T. Brown after 11 play, 63 yard drive with 1:43 remaining.
Georgia St. was able to answer one last time. Starting from their own 27 yard line, Ben McLane went 5 of 8 for 55 yards to get the ball to the 18 yard line with 8 seconds to go. An 8 yard run by Gerald Howse set up the game-winning 27 yard FG by Will Lutz as time expired.
