In 2008/09 EASports took a huge step forward in online gaming this year. However IMO they took their top five games in a different directions. Maybe they are testing the waters in 09!?!? As for the top five Im talking about it is NCAA Football 09, Madden 09, NBA Live 09, NCAA Basketball 09, NHL 09. Here are my takes on those games.
The Bad = Madden 09 & NBA Live 09
The Ugly = NCAA Basketball 09
Anyway that is my 2 cents on a few EASportsgames for 09. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment. I wrote this out quickly with no proof! So please overlook my typos
- NCAA Football 09 was the best overall sports game that EA came out with this past year. Besides a few bugs with the Online Dynasty it was the best single game add in the past 4 to 5 years. Once they work the bugs out and add a few new features, NCAA Football 10 should be a killer game. As for the new features I would like to see:
- Spectator Mode: Since the release of NCAA a bunch of friends and myself have been in several different online dynasties. When we get to that big game every season that usually determines the National Championship game we are all in party chat wishing we could watch the game. I guess the biggest concern could be the lag it could cause by having a spectator mode.
- Different Recruit Rankings: Have at least 2 different ranking like ESPN and Rivials.
- Signing Day: Signing day has become a HUGE day in college football with players scheduling their signing for the school of their choice. Why not have a short clip for the top 10-15 recruits that didnt already commit sitting behind a table with 3 or 4 hats in front of them ..
- Madden 09 was 50/50 for me this year. Myskill was a good add because IMO it keeps the game more realistic with close games and not blowout after blowout. Not having an online franchise mode was a huge negative. Being able to draft and trade with human players would be a blast. Just think you land your buddy best RB from NCAA in the draft then you beat him in the Super Bowl with the legs of that RB. What I would like to see added in Madden 10:
- Online Franchise: Online Franchise is a MUST! Its simple for me whether I buy Madden or not this year. No Online Franchise = No buy .
- Online Franchise:
- Online Franchise:
- Be a Pro Overhaul: Take a look at NHL 09 its a perfect model to build from.
- NBA Live 09 game-play and graphically was a great game. However why must you have at least 3 people for OTP? Take a look at NHL OTP for the perfect setup. NBA Live Wishlist:
- Online Franchise: You guessed it!
- Better OTP Setup: Play NHL 09 OTP and take notes ..
- Be a Pro Overhaul: Take a look at NHL 09 its a perfect model to build from. The current Be a Pro is horrible!
- NCAA Basketball 09 IMO was a bust
Take NBA Live 09 throw college jerseys on the players, of course add Online Dynasty, add OTP and you got a great game. My wishlist for NCAA is simple:
- Completely overhaul: Convert NBA Live into NCAA Basketball
- NHL 09 is a great game and this comes from a person that dislikes the sport of hockey. OTP and Be a Pro was done perfectly!
The Bad = Madden 09 & NBA Live 09
The Ugly = NCAA Basketball 09

For Me to Consider NCAA football to be next gen it needs two things:
(1) FCS programs - Are you kidding me these teams are in the last gen games but not the so-called Next Gen, Hello App. St. Beat Michigan the other year these teams are relevant. Time to catch up EA.
(2)FCS Playoffs - This a next gen game right, I mean when did you get less when the format was supposedly better, I think the playoffs have been long overdue and a feature sorely missed in video games since "Bill Walsh College Football" on the SNES.
Since I'm on my soapbox I just want to add this, the worst thing that could have happened to video gamers recently has been the "Format Wars" of disc based media inititated by Microsoft releasing the "Xbox 360" to early. We as gamers are suffering because we have one system using an older media format DVD-9 with a max capacity of 7.95 gigs (Xbox 360) and the PS3 using the Blu-ray format which can go 25 to 50 gigs depending whether it is singl or dual layer. Why do these numbers matter, because companies like EA will go for the lower in number because (1) its cheaper & (2) its cheaper. For the Gamer that means less features, for those that don't know DVD-9 games were available on the previous gen original Xbox. It is the lack of capacity that is killing the gaming this so called "Next-Gen". Just compare any multi-platform sports game to "MLB 09 The Show" nuff said.

Thanks for the input....
However my only question to you is did you reply to the wrong blog? Or did you just need to rant and/or vent?

The FCS programs and playoffs are for my wishlist for NCAA Football '10 the rest was just a rant, as far as raring this previous year titles I would agree with your assessments.

I agree 100% with adding the true FCS teams. I never really thought about that.

As far as the "Format Wars" go, you hit the nail right on the head. I own a PS3, and the simple fact that EA will stay stagnant on PS3 versions of Madden just because the Xbox 360 has a cheaper format irritates me. It lets me know that Microsoft wasn't really bringing anything innovative to the table when creating the 360, and now Sony Computer Entertainment is suffering because of it.
As far as the EA Sports' 09 roster, I thought it was about average. For a big company like EA, I expect them to push the envelope every year. But, they only deliver average product. Madden was better than it has been in about 3 years, but, lets be honest, here: I think what hardcore sports gamers want is simulation, not re-animation. Ever since Madden 06 and NBA Live 06, all we've been getting is canned-animation ridden, cheeser-rewarding arcade games.
NCAA Football was alright, but it could've been better. Madden is my biggest dissapointment. For a game that is EA Sports' flagship franchise, they spend alot of time catching up with a 2K Sports game that came out 4 years ago (NFL 2K5). But it was a pretty good game this year. NBA Live is beginning to be NBA 2K's Achillie's Heel, but there are some things that need to be solved if they ever hope to be on top. NHL was really good, almost as good as MLB 09: The Show. NCAA Basketball 09 is the new Madden: since NCAA College Hoops 2K no longer exists, it gave EA a reason to slack off.
I think for EA Sports to have a great year in 2009-2010, the have to stop making their sports games using their marketing department. EA, you hire developers for a reason: use them!

NCAA Football 09 : There needs to be Division I-AA teams added....basically every team that is available in the PS2 version...we need that on PS3/360....We need the ability to Create a Team, the NCAA 06 Race for the Heisman was FAAAR better than the Campus Legend....It is better to be able to call your own plays and control your players destiny instead of having to rely on the CPU. Better Presentation! ALL AROUND!
Madden 09: Better Presentation (NFL2K5 is still winning four years later), More realistic gameplay, and a Better Be a Pro mode..(see what I said about NCAA Football 09) Add in the features we need in Madden 10 as well...I want everything we see On SUnday and in the Playoffs/Superbowl...to be prevalent in MAdden 10'....
NBA Live 09: game was Really Good...but could use better commentary and make it where players step out of bounds instead of a force field keeping them in bounds...beef up the graphics and add a few more animations/modes such as a REAL be a Pro Mode...and 2K will lose the crown. Keep Live 365 too!
NCAA Basketball: OVERHAUL! Great ball movement in 09, but the tempo must truly vary team to team and the Atmosphere must be like COLLEGE Hoops 2K8...add a True Practice Mode.....just really put a genuine effort into this game...it was really really UGLY this year.
NHL 09...Make a Great game into a LEGENDARY one...

You seem to have most things right. I think there should be some better offline features

I don't know how people think that NCAA 09 is a good or even really a decent game. Now, I'm not usually a basher. I really enjoyed NCAA 08. Both games have their flaws, but 09 AI is just very dumb on offense and defense. When I play online, just about without exception, I win, or if the other player is good, neither of us ever stop the other and the last person to score wins. Defensive AI is so bad, and worse yet, predictable. I can complete 80% of my passes online in every game.
The gameplay just seems so jacked up to me this year. If '08 engine had gang tackling, more realistic blocking, and 09 animations, I'd be in heaven. But I get the feeling they put "Wide Open Gameplay" as a tag for "Our defensive AI is crap". Playing offline shows that the offensive AI is not far ahead.

I can agree that NHL '09 was a great model that I think they should copy for NBA Live & NCAA Basketball for 2010 games. NHL OTP was pretty close to perfect. I've not played but I've heard FIFA is pretty similar to NHL. As for NCAA Football it was Online dynasty mode that made it a great game for me.
