The Indianapolis Colts came into the week struggling. They were 0-2 after losing to the Giants and the Texans, in both losses they could not get their running game going. Coming into the game against Denver they were averaging 62.5 yards per game on the ground. Manning had looked efficient but no like his former self.
The Broncos marched into week 3 confident and with their head held high despite a injury plagued defense. In their previous two victories Kyle Orton had played spectacularly and Knowshon Moreno showed vast improvements from last season. The Broncos defense was the most impressive, only allowing just under 200 yards per game on average.
Both teams reverted into last seasons form in this match up. The Colts exploded on offense and the Broncos floundered with the ball. The end result, a 37-17 route. Joseph Addai ran for 176 yards on the ground and Donald Brown added 86 yards of his own. The Colts shredded the Denver defense which routinely packed seven or eight men in the box trying to slow down the Colts running game. Manning in turn lit up the one on one coverage in the secondary passing for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns.
As soon as the game started you knew it was over. On the fifth play of the game Manning dropped a perfect pass over the shoulder of a streaking Dallas Clark for a 49 yard touchdown pass. He beat line backer Robert Ayers on the play.
Next Colt's possession Joseph Addai took a hand off ran into a wall of linemen before bouncing outside and exploding up field. The Broncos had no chance of catching him and he was gone for a 74 yard touchdown gallop.
The Colts never looked back, getting constant pressure on Orton throughout the day. Kyle finished 13 of 30 for 141 yards and 2 interceptions. The running game never had a chance for the Broncos either; they were held to 40 yards rushing. Indianapolis outgained the Broncos 530 yards to 134. The only bright side for Denver was an explosive 88 yard punt return touchdown for Eddie Royal, his second special teams touchdown of the year.
After the game Manning suggested that his team had finally found their form, "The last couple of weeks have been difficult for us. The offense was having problems with timing and we couldn't get on the same page. Everything clicked out their today and we really found our groove. Now we have to focus on having a great week in practice and preparing for the Jaguars."
The Broncos face the Tennessee Titans next week. Their front seven will have to preform much better to keep Chris Johnson in check.
