Broncos Rally to Defeat Hawks in Overtime
The Denver Broncos showed their resilience, Sunday afternoon, battling back from a ten point deficit to eventually win the game in overtime. Matt Prater kicked the game winning field goal from 43 yards out to make up for an earlier miss from 34 yards away.
Overtime started with the teams trading four and outs before Denver took control. Kyle Orton completed many short dump offs on the drive before Knowshon Moreno burst free for a 27 yard carry on 3rd and 1 that took Denver into field goal range. Prater calmly nailed the field goal despite being iced by the Seahawks.
After falling behind 17-7 when Forsett returned the second half opening kick 96 yards for a touchdown, the Broncos fired off 16 straight points of their own, moving the ball mainly through the air. Kyle Orton threw for 302 yards to 8 different targets and 2 touchdowns to lead the offense. Moreno chipped in, carrying the ball for 97 yards.
The early going was tough for Denver. Moreno fumbled the ball on the first play of the day. Seattle recovered but was not able to move the ball against a stout Denver defense and settled for a field goal. Soon after Leon Washington provided a spark with a 32 yard reception out of the backfield. He broke two tackles before being pushed out of bounds down the side line. Three plays later Washington capped the 8 play 66 yard drive with a 7 yard dash into the endzone.
Matt Hasselbeck struggled all game with his accuracy, finishing 10 for 18 for 68 yards and 2 interceptions. He looked unsettled in the pocket and was unable to throw down the field with any accuracy at all. Justin Forsett supplied most of Seattle's offense carrying the ball 20 times for 101 yards.
Denver faces the Indianapolis Colts next week who are also coming off an overtime thriller in which they lost to the Giants 20-17.
Notes around the league:
The Buffalo Bills took advantage of 3 Aaron Rodgers interceptions and defeated the Packers 20-13.
The 49ers defeated the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints despite Alex Smith leaving the game with a concussion. David Carr threw for 126 yards and a touchdown in the 15-10 victory.
