The Broncos continued their offensive explosion from last week against the Titans scoring 31 points on a defense that had only given up 43 points all season.
Denver dominated time of possession at an almost 3 to 1 rate in their 31-17 victory. Josh McDaniels has done an amazing job turning Kyle Orton into one of the premier passers in the league. Orton completed passes to 9 different receivers and completed 5 passes each to 4 different targets. He accurately completed throws in the face of heavy pressure in the first half as Denver jumped out to a 21-7 lead. In the second half Baltimore stopped using its exotic blitzes in a strategy reminiscent to what teams use against Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.
The scoring started with Eddie Royal getting stripped on a punt return. Chris Carr scooped up the ball and ran 51 yards into the endzone to put Baltimore up 7-0.
Denver began the game using a lot of two tight end sets and running Knowshon Moreno right at the Ravens defense. This strategy continued into the second quarter and lead to a 13 play 67 yard drive that included 7 running plays. It was capped by a 16 yard post route to Eddie Royal. Orton stood in the face of pressure and was hit hard by Ray Lewis as he released the ball, but the ball was delivered perfectly and Denver tied the game.
Baltimore answered with a drive of their own but a missed field goal gave the Broncos good field position. Denver immediately took advantage on the first play when Orton's play action pass was complete to Daniel Graham for a 42 yard gain. A couple of plays later Buckhalter plowed his way into the endzone from 2 yards out.
Orton lead another succesful 2 minute drill before halftime, capped with a 9 yard pass to Brandon Lloyd who broke a tackle and squirted into the endzone. At the half the Ravens only had 59 yards of total offense.
Denver's defense was well rested all day and played extremely well only surrendering 3 points in garbage time. Baltimore had both of their touchdowns on fumble returns. Kyle Orton was sacked by Ngata in the 4th quarter, McKinney scooped it up and lumbered 82 yards for the touchdown. After the Bronco's went 3 and out Baltimore marched down the field again as Ray Rice ate up yardage on draw plays. Cundiff kicked a 40 yard field goal that cut Denvers lead to 24-17. Baltimore could not recover onside kick and Moreno scored from 1 yard out with 1:21 left to give the final count.
After 5 weeks the division standings are starting to shape up. The NFC East looks to be a very tough division. The Saints and Packers are underperforming and the Broncos are playing above preseason expectations.
