NCAA vs. MLB the Show
Posted on April 1, 2009 at 04:33 PM.
I don’t want to sound like someone who is never happy with anything that the NCAA development team does. What I want to do with this blog is voice my wishes for the 2010 game and future games to come. By no means do I want to sound like I know what I’m talking about or that I know what it takes to build a game, like some of the bloggers. I’m just a regular college football fan, who loves this video game. Or better yet, am in love with the potential for the game. I do play MLB the Show which is not an EA Sports game, but I will say that if a football game could look and feel like that game, it’d be the best game on the market, mainly because baseball is just boring. So the key here is how to get NCAA to be as good as MLB. I don’t know. But the following is my humble wish list.

1) Uniform and Stadium Accuracy – I know its hard to predict the exact uniform and sock colors that a team may wear five months in advance. But the stadiums are pretty much set in stone, and any major changes are usually in the works for months. MLB the Show even had the new Shea Stadium being built in the background of the old Shea in last year’s game. That’s a tad more accurate than the Alamo Dome looking like the Cotton Bowl.

2) Player Models and Movement – I’m not by any stretch a gaming artist, but I see what I see. Not to keep bringing MLB into the conversation, but the players look so much like real people, and the movements are so natural to baseball. It truly is an amazing game. I just wish that NCAA Football could (not this year obviously) re-work the models to look more like real people and real football players. Even though I will say the shots so far do look better than last year, especially the running. I know that art is art, and it’s more than just Weird Science, but maybe NCAA needs to go out and hire the best in the industry. Because, man it can make a difference.

3) Dynasty Mode – I love Dynasty mode, it’s pretty much the only thing I play whether it’s with friends or by myself. I don’t really have any complaints, other than I would like to be able to grow programs better. The main things I’d like to see in the future are the ability to grow a stadium base on the success of the program. Also to be able to update and adjust uniforms as you go in the dynasty. And since this is a wish list, I’m just gonna throw out my dream. I’d like to see the CPU teams automatically grow and change in the dynasty based on success. What would be cool is if certain teams keep their uniforms the same (the old bloods), but other teams would tweak and randomly change their uniforms based off pre-set uniforms (unlockable). So in say year seven you schedule a team like Arizona State, and they come out in new uniforms. The key here would be that not every team would do it and it should be completely random.

4) Coaches – While I’m dreaming here, I have another one. I’d like the coaches to play as big of a part in the game as they do in real life. Coaches make or break programs and not just the head coaches but the coordinators and assistants too. So what would be a cool feature to have in the dynasty mode is the ability to hire, fire and loose coaches and coordinators. Maybe they could have some type of rating system where they excel in certain areas like recruiting, defensive and offensive philosophies, and attitude. The next part of this could be that these coaches have generated names, and can be lured away to better jobs, even head coaching jobs. So that even when the USER goes looking for new jobs, he is competing with other CPU coaches. Also, as a coach you can hire coaches away from other programs. To do this we would need a budget, and so on, and so on. This is clearly a dream, but NCAA did create Online Dynasty in 09 so why not this. The key here is that it should be a feature that can be turned off or on at the beginning of the dynasty.

I’ve just always wanted to voice my opinion of what I’d like to see in my favorite game. And when I see other games like MLB that are done so well, it gives me hope for what may come in NCAA. I think we all think that way. What do you guys think?

FIRST!!!!!!! Yea man you have some pretty sweet ideas. You know a game is good though when your reaching like that for things to add. MLB best game ever!

I think it is a little harder to build a game with all the bells a whistles with 120 teams etc.. compared to the shows 30 MLB teams to get accurate. I believe that it can be done it is just a lot more work. EA has the $$ to make it happen and I think 09 was a better product than 08 hopefully they can keep the momentum going.

i like the ideas...ill just add that they put the fcs teams or what ever they are calling them now back into the ncaa game...i hate the fcs southeast, southwest or wherever...it is not realistic at all...and as far as coaching id like to have them make it like college hoops series and start out at a small time school and either have to build them up or get hired by a bigger school..call it the coaching career mode...and still keep the normal dynasty mode where you can choose your favorite team and run them the same way.
