R.I.P. 2K5???
Posted on August 14, 2009 at 02:46 PM.
I have waited 5 long years to make this statement but I think its finally time to put my beloved 2K5 to rest. Its not that I play the game everyday or APF8 for that matter, but 2K set the standard for me IMO of what a football game should be.

I don't consider myself a 2K fanboy because I have owned at least 18 out of 21 copies of Madden, but I have waited 5 long years for Madden to improve and show us that they cared enough about the quality of their product that we were buying year end and year out.

I will say this I played the demo and I saw some small improvements but after almost a full year of daily updates on the official 2010 page and coutless other Madden websites I was somewhat disapointed. I stand in line and pick up my reserved copy and about 12:30 am I pop Madden in and was blown away...I can truly say that I was astounded by the difference from the demo to the finished product.

I expected better graphics, presentation, and gameplay but this exceded my expectations from what I had come to expect from Madden year in and year out. I wanted to hug Ian and his staff for giving our beloved Madden a much needed shot in the arm.

Everything from graphics, presentation and gameplay is much improved. This edition of Madden gives me hope for the future that our perfect football game is just over the horizon.

The game runs so smoothly compared to the demo and past editions. Running lanes open better, the signature QB throwing motions is amazing and like I said I imagine that in the very near future they will apply these signature styles to the rest of the players throughout the game.

I love the depth of field in the passing game and how the WRs track the ball with their hands and make over the shoulder and in traffic with contact catches. Defensively CBs and safeties react well to the ball, all defenders leap realistically when attempting to intercept or knock balls away, and even though there is some suction with the DL/OL interaction it is tremendously improved. I imagine that once I master using the right analog stick to perform moves this will be even less of an issue. The couple of times I've used it correctly I was able to come off the OL for some nice sacks and tackles.

My absolute favorite thing about this game is that this is the 1st game ever that you can feel your players ratings ...ever! I don't only mean speed because every game can duplicate speed, I mean you feel your actual ratings like never before. AGL, PWR, ACC, FM, PM, ACC, TWP, AWR you will feel all these and more depending on who you use.

There are so many subtle improvements that come along with this that some people may not even notice. I'll use an example of a 90+ spd WR catching a drag route acroos the middle with a 75 spd LB trailing him. In past editions it was a 5 yard catch and tackle but this year your WR will catch and because his ACC and SPD is higher pull away from the slower linebacker.
This goes a long ways to how you use the personel on your team and not only that but how you attack other teams personel.

I know the more I play this game I will discover glitches and things that need improved but this is a giant leap forward for Madden. The only issues I have so far with 2010 are sideline and endzone catches, are you really telling me that after the catch made by S. Holmes in the superbowl we still don't have toe taps on catches going out of bounds or in the back of the endzone.

So far the commentating, crowd, and atmosphere seem canned. I know that there was mention that you would feel the difference in playoff and rivalry games but so far it just sounds like a monotone loop of sound and commentary. When you watch football or go to the stadium the crowd takes on a life of its own and adds to the moment and can sometimes play sway with things like momentum, big plays, and penalties. It would be great if at certain times the crowd got so loud you couldn't hear your QB calling the cadence or the crowd actually explode after a game winning touchdown. A clutch rating would be perfect for moments like this in determining if your players could perform at key moments of the game under pressure but these are the moments that would add great atmosphere to a football game.

My last very small thing is player size. The players look great but they are so tiny I think if they were a little larger it would feel like there was more physics and weight to the players but thats just a personal preference of mine.

Overall this is the best football game I've played to date and I'm actually giddy about playing Madden again for reasons other than having the most current players on my roster. With all of this being said its safe to say that 2K can now pass the torch back to the gridiron king Madden 2010.

well for one madden actually has defense and not every game takes 2 hours because you just take turns throwing bombs for TDs every game in 2k5 and 2k8 you scored 50 to 60 points each that is not real football every now and then you score 30 or 40 but not both teams every game..the DBs sucked you couldnt tackle any bigger running back againts the cpu they ran for 250 300 yards a game with one player. 2k5 was great for its time but give it up every one even liked madden 2005 better that year anyway.. peace

Huh? I don't remember that. And please don't talk about Madden's defense. It's just too funny.

ive always been a 2k5 fan but this year its not even close....2K5 had the cool presentation with half time and weekly shows which Madden will add last year. Also a good challenge system but the gameplay isnt close to Madden 10 now. Also Madden 10 has so many things, that 2k5 has. Madden 10 easily has 2k5 beat. Next year if Madden adds what they need to add 2k5 wont even be mentioned with Madden 11.

well I have brought my first Madden game EVER last night, been playing 2k5 as my official football game for six years now. Keep my xbox exclusively just to play that game. So it's 2009 and I see Madden has made strides, but I got to be honest, it feels like a rush job of 2k5. All the cut scenes seem to be ripped right from 2k5, like a developer fired up the old XBOX and showed it to his staff, and said "Give me that"

The only problem is the presentation is hollow, like a rush job, to shut those up begging for EA to step up to the plate. The halftime, post game and weekly shows in Madden feel clumsly in some ways, they seem like only half of 2k5's presentation. Don't get me wrong EA is FINALLY on the right track, but Madden 10 didn't toss the dirt on 2k5 yet, but the casket is getting ready IF they CONTINUE to expand next year.

While I agree with the blog, I just think it's sad that people feel as though they haven't been trying with Madden all this time.

Go through the history of the game, on every new system it appeared on, it took about 4-5 years before they made the landmark Madden for that generation of systems. Most people would say the best Madden for SNES/Genesis is '94. PS1 was Madden '99, The best Madden on PS2 was either 2004 or 2005, either way, it took them about the same amount of years to get there, so how could anyone expect it to be any faster with this generation of systems, which are vastly more complicated to begin with? Hell, it took 2k5 5 years of trial and error, how come nobody mentions that?

ESPN 2K5's Presentation is still KING.....and number 1 with a bullet! Madden 10 has the gameplay but lacks the presentational polish!!!!

Actually, NFL2K5 is already dead! It is the GHOST of 2K5 that Madden is competition with. And as good as Madden 10 is, it STILL does not out do the ghost of 2K5. The day is coming when Madden will out best NFL2K5, but that day has not come yet. 2K5 will live on, forever haunting Madden until EA comes correct. There will be no death for 2K5, for you cannot kill a ghost.

ALL legends are given a higher degree of love than they deserve. This is the nature legends. All of the likes and dislikes only serve to add to the lore. Every time someone calls on their love or hate for someone or something in the past, the legend grows. For Madden to attain legend status, EA may have to give up the franchise. Remembrance will always be fonder than the future. Who can be nostalgic about something that hasn't happened yet.

It will take some time for 2K5 to fade from memory. So far EA has helped to keep that memory/legend alive. I find it quite ironic that a game that's 5 years old can still push Madden to compete. For that I am thankful for NFL2K5 and I hope its memory never dies.

2k5 is not dead, but I will not be playing anytime soon. M10 is a beautiful game and fun to play, I think with to new animations and ratings system Madden has finally taken the lead, but only because there has not been a 2k game in some years.......just imagine what could be. 2k5 will rest now because Madden gives me my fix, but it is not dead just in critical condtion.

at #14 I wish they would hire 2k staff to help

my man..2k can never pass a torch to madden.. Madden has been trying to follow up to 2k's (stolen) success and they admitted that themselves. playing madden 10 is like playing 2k5 with maddens name in it. the presentation, the graphics, all are on 2k5 to credit. and to be honest, the graphics really aint **** in a football game. not every player looks like they are supposed to..(see the titans QB) Madden NFL 2006 on the 360 looks way better than madden 10. i agree with you on the game play (my favorite is the running game made by the pro-tak element) but it has problems itself...you can see certain players espace a 7 man tackle that shouldnt.

I think people are to quick on passing the torch because if they would slow down and play Madden 10 they would pass the torch back to 2k5.
