Effective September 28th 2013 I have brought in our new General Manager for the Philadelphia Flyers. It may come to many as a surprise and a name that no one would have guessed but I have decided to hire Tom Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has spent the past 6 seasons with the Penguins organization 2 years as Director of Player Development and 4 years as Assistant General Manager. Coming from a fantastic winning organization like Pittsburgh I knew Tom has learned the game from one of the greatest GM's in Ray Shero. Not only has Tom been a part of such a fantastic organization, he also played over 1000 NHL games over a 17 year career. This is a man who knows how players feel and who has been learning from one of the greats. I have absolute confidence in Tom and am really excited as to what he will bring to this team. We will be holding a press conference later this week to further introduce Tom to the media at a later date.
As for the season thus far, we had an absolutely amazing Pre-Season that saw us going 6-1-0. Lead by the captain Giroux who put up 14 points. That success saw carried over to the season opener vs the Toronto Maple Leafs. Our home town crowd was able to witness a 6-2 thrashing dealt to the Leafs. What excited me the most is the scoring didnt come from the top guns, Steve Downie chipped in for 2 goals, and the 4th line even got in on the action. I thought Meszaros had an absolutely phenomenal game on the back end. Was very hesitant putting out Coburn and L.Schenn at some points during the game. It seemed the speed of Toronto was almost too much for them to handle. Here is a box score re-cap of the home opener winning game.
