Posted on October 11, 2011 at 11:07 AM.
10. Public enemy- Fight the Power
Extremely influential song -that challenged the urban community to join together, and fight the powers that be, which were dividing the community. Born following the intense economical policies of Reagonomics, this song spun off classic songs and collaborations such as self destruction, where hip-hop artists joined forces to spawn a movement.

9. T.I.- T.I. Vs TIP
Extremely underrated classic, which could very easily be the number one, hip-hop lyricist song of all-time! One of the first songs were a hip-hop artist challenges the duality of his alter ego, through self-help, guidance, and motivation. This track showed, that hip hop artist of various backgrounds (south) can be just as enlightened, if not more enlightened than their east coast counterparts.

8. Jay Z- Song Cry
Every man has made mistakes with women and have an awesome woman, from our past, who we've let get away. We felt that pain in this song, where H.O.V.A begs for forgiveness when he finally acknowledges the woman he's wronged has finally moved on. A touching track indeed!

7. Slick Rick- Children's Story
Wow! Talking about painting a picture! This song took you on a ride light none other. A modern day version of Peter and the Wolf, this song showed the artistry of story telling that could be implemented in a hip-hop song.

6. Roots- What they do
A controversial track which poked fun, at the perceived, less enlightened hip-hop community. It also had one of the funniest music videos of hip-hops long illustrious history.

5, Outkast- Ms Jackson
Let's face it, being an involved single father is one of the most challenging feats a man can over come. This gem reminded single fathers, you are not alone. Weather the storm, take care of your business, and stand firm in the face of social adversity.

4. Eminem-Stan
From the opening chorus, to the traumatic and shocking end, this song takes you on a ride with the idol-ship fans pour onto their favorite musicians. An extremely disturbing track, which spoke to the dysfunction artist feeds to an even more, dysfunctional audience.

3. Nas-Rewind
Inspired by the movie Memento, Nas under goes one of the most impressive feats in hip-hop history..... The dude writes a song backwards! Impressive to say the least and ushers hip-hop into the realm of artistry, which has arguably never been duplicated since.

2.Tupac- Brenda has a baby
Social consciousness and our personal lives being, fully, integrated in a complex world took it to an entirely new level in this track. Tupac enlightens the world how one soul, headed down a destructive path affects the whole, not just the a singular entity. A true classic!

1. Lupe fiasco- Dumb it Down
The feat this young man accomplished in this song was phenomenal. He pokes fun at executives and the streets for their lack of knowledge and inability to cipher through complex lyrics. An extremely, complex song which lyricists will study for years. Give it a listen, put it on repeat, and you will continue to discover goose eggs through every play.

Your favorite song wasn't on the list..... Sound off below, but provide insight on the impact you believe it had on hip-hop/musical culture.

Like I said, any top 10 or top 5 list without T.R.O.Y. is fail...

Wow! No EB&R, KRS One/BDP, De la, Ice Cube/NWA or Run DMC. In all truth, a top 10 list in music is like picking the prettiest snowflake. Too much data out there. But to not have songs from these artists is a travesty.
