Say Hey Boys and Girls! It's Opening Day!
Hope springs eternal on Opening Day! Every Team believes that they can win this year.
And Opening Day began this year in Miami under the lights as the new look Miami Marlins took on the World Champion St Louis Cardinals.
All the excitement of opening a brand new ball park, the smell, the sounds.. Carlos Beltran will forever be remembered as the first player to get a hit. But to the Marlins joy, Logan Morrison will go into the record books as the first player to light up the big fountain with a long homer to right. It's going, going, gone!
In the American League, the big news over the off season was the announcement that the 40 year old experiment known as the Designated Hitter will be no more! From now on, fans in both Leagues will be on the edge of their seats as they try thinking with the Manager. Will he keep the pitcher in for one more inning, or will he do a double-switch? Will he sacrifice or pinch hit? While some were critical of the decision, many applauded the return of tradition in an era where tradition seems to have lost some of it's sparkle.
And on Opening Day in Detroit, Justin Verlander became the first American League Pitcher to hit in a League game since Luis Tiant in 1974, laying down a clean bunt in the second, and then reaching base on a bloop single to right in the fourth. He later scored the first run of the Tigers season. It just goes to show that if you carry a bat, you're dangerous.
In Anaheim, the big news was the AL debut of Albert Pujols. He's off to a fantastic start, batting .467 with 3 HRs and 8 RBIs.
Ricky Romano was the star for Toronto as he pitched a complete game against the Indians.
Another big moment in Toronto as Cody Rasmus hit 3 Home Runs to help beat Boston 9-2.
In the National League, Opening Day meant exciting extra inning baseball, as the Reds and Marlins played 11 innings in a 10-9 win for the Marlins. The Braves won a thriller over the Mets 5-4 in 10. One of the most exciting moments of any season was when Dee Gordon of the Dodgers hit an inside the park home run against the Padres. How about that!
