Madden Ratings Killing its MoJo
Posted on February 2, 2012 at 12:16 PM.
typically my blogs are long and very thorough. this time i will keep it short and sweet.

as we look towards Madden 13 and new info will slowly be released, one thing I know for sure is nothing that they do in this game will fix its lack of playability until they fix the ratings system. Im going to paint a picture for you, follow it along and tell me how it goes.

1. Madden 13 adds hundreds of new animations for catching, running, oline and dline interactions and wr/db interactions.

2. A.I. is fixed, no more psychic Db's, super linebackers, cheap trades in franchise, dumb depth chart moves by the cpu or stupid resigning of players.

3. Presentation joins the likes of Nba 2k12, Mlb The show, and Nfl 2k5. thousands upon thousands of lines of commentary were added that flow smoothly together and talk about different aspects throughout games assuring you wont hear the same thing every game. they upgraded stat banners, replays, half time show and post game show as well as throwing in a weekly recap show.

now, although it would be very easy for me to keep going on improvements made to the game. I am stopping here because lets be honest, those 3 things are too much to expect from Madden.

stay strong keep that picture painted because I am about to sweeten the pot.

YOU HAVE FOUND THE ABSOLUTE PERFECT SLIDER SET FOR YOU!

Now, imagine yourself in franchise mode, and you chose a bottom 10 team. the first year is challenging and you miss the playoffs.
suddenly, year 2 is on its way. and your team jumped from bottom feeder to superbowl contender in 1 year. how did this happen?

sure you signed some free agents because we all know its impossible to not get any free agent you want in the game.

then you had a solid draft knowing at least 3 players you drafted overall's before they stepped foot on the field.

but the reason your team made that leap is mostly because of 1 thing and 1 thing only. ratings!

so many players are given A or B potentials. this causes a substantial amount of players to improve. and when players are already over rated by a minimum 10 points. it takes a year to have a huge stack of 80 or higher rated players on your team.

I dare you to open up a franchise in 32 team control and go through each team and count how many A rated potential guys there are and then B rated. compared to C rated players. dont waste your time on D rated players because their ratings are already so low they dont play anyway.

How can Madden be playable when it is so easy to build a powerhouse. How can Madden remain a challenge when so many players are rated so high after 1 year.

Ratings play a huge roll in the Madden experience and until Donny Moore realizes it. the game will continue to stay stale, and if you follow him on twitter, you know their is no change coming to having so many players rated so high on the game when pop it in to play.

so what do you think?

is the Picture I painted for you enough even if Madden 13 still has the ratings and potential/progression issues of its predecessors or are you fed up and waiting until their is a change?

They need to do alot more than that to keep me interested. Its not so much the excitement of when the game comes out and all the hype but still wanting to play it 2 months into the season. Like you said franchise is lack luster at best with player ratings being overrated, Tavaris Jackson a A I dont think in this lifetime or any other. I hate to say it but I think if they dumb it down it would work so much better then it does. For instance a QB should have Accuracy,Throw power,Speed,Awareness,Inj,Rushing stat, maybe one or two more and thats it keep it simple with simple varibles. Injuries that affect the players and some might not come back from some serious injuries, then drop there ratings.Cpu trades I could go on and on. EA will never make a perfect game with everything that should be in it because lets face it, if they did they would be broke the following years to come unless they charge just for roster updates.

in sticking to your ratings thought, do potentials change as years go on? if a F player comes in the league can he become a C rated player if he is on the bench long enough?

i am not sure if potential ever changes. but if it doesn't IMO it should. Bench warmers could be a C or D even and on the right team be a B or A. These things IRL happen.

so in short, does the potential ratings change? depending on the players situation. in FA i can't imagine their potential can get any better.

what do you think?

potential ratings do not change. they are set in stone, and its 5 grades. why not be like 2k and have it on a 0-100 scale that can fluctuate and gets a letter grade still like b- or c-+. the way madden has the potential set up. everyone jist goes for b or a potential players. personally i think a rookies potential shouldnt be listed until after his first season.

after his roolie year a soft potential is given that can can fluctuate within a set range over the next 2 years. this helps remove guys you have good rookie years, get an A potential and then have a bad 2nd year.

so 2 years he will have a fluctuating potential based on his performances and injury. after his 3rd season the cpu calculates his numbers. his growth or decline. and sets the according potential to that player that will stick for the rest of his career

in order for my idea to work they must incorporate a 0-100 scale for potential so u can have d+, c-, b, etc for potential grades.

i simmed all 30 years with the rams and i had 90s in every posistion with 90% of the roster in A's and the rest in B's no Cs Ds or Fs

i won 18 superbowls out of all 30..,lost the superbowl 4 other times so it couldve been 22/30

with Spagnolo, J.Harr, and Steven Jackson(RB) as head coaches

smh...

Its hard because you can make a case for everyone having an A potential. The right situation can turn any player into a good player. What do you do if you have a QB on the bench for 3 or 4 seasons? How does the game take that into account? I would like to see the rating aystem from head coach make its way into madden. I also think ratings should be a little spread out, with top players being in the 80's, average player in the 70's & 60's and below average in the 50's and 40's. I think the game would play more true to real life. Although it would never happen. Some people want to see everyone in the 90's

i agree, spread out the ratings . fix potential. add things like chemistry and playbook knowledge towards ratings. also give each player a "type" like tim tebow players need to be in a system like the broncos to manage. throw him in the patriots system an look out for the boo birds. depending on the type of system that suits a player best compared to the system he is in should effect progression
