my NBA 2K12 cover thoughts and some other things on my mind
Posted on July 21, 2011 at 06:01 PM.
I'm 27, really didn't watch basketball until I was about 12-ish (1996) and in that year Chicago went 72-10. As far as Jordan was concerned, my memories of the man only exist from that point until present. So I really didn't have a recollection of those earlier times; only the highlights. So for me, it was enjoyable to have 2K recreate those experiences in that way.
Now add Magic and Bird to the mix along with what is sure to be a bevy of other classic teams and this is really going to be a unique gaming experience. Forget 10 challenges, give me 25, give me 50!! I really never got to see Magic & Bird play but these men are lauded for how their rivalry changed the game.
Usually when you think of the Basketball Mount Rushmore it goes like this: MJ, Magic, Bird, Dr. J and Bill Russell. Yes Wilt and Kareem are also deserving, maybe even Shaq (and hopefully when all is said and done Kobe, Duncan & Garnett). However, to have Bird and Magic in a challenge (which I hope includes a 7 game series in a 1987 finals or so) and have them from day one will make 2K12 a really fun year.
Now, to a degree, I agree with those who believe that maybe Rose, Blake or Dirk should of got cover. Those guys had really great years and they are great for the game of basketball. However, think about it this way, before 2K11 and really not counting those decade All Star teams 2K would throw in, how many of us really appreciated the greatness of these players. I know some of you older cats do, but for the younger ones, this is something of a dream come true for me. Believe me when I say this, no current NBA player of status will feel slighted because he didn't make the 2K cover.
All we ever hear about is how great Wilt was, how great Magic and Kareem were against Bird's Celts. I don't know if Wilt's and Bill's teams will be in the game but I sure hope they will be. The NBA history is somewhat of a mystery to most of us. Sure we have stats and highlights, but having the ability to live through these guys digitally is something else.
In short (or long depending on who you are) I love the idea, the hype machine has officially started for me. I'd love to hear what your guys think, even debate if you want. Be sensible, and at the end of the day, regardless of who you wanted on the cover (personally I didn't really care but thought DRose would be the guy), we all have one common denominator: just make a game that is fun to play and true to the game.
Thanks for reading.
