I Hate the Wii
Posted on November 6, 2009 at 04:47 PM.
I can’t help but be annoyed at the amount of success the Wii has had over the last couple years. I shouldn’t be annoyed but I am. I guess I just don’t understand how an overpriced and underpowered toy box with a goofy controller can sell so many more consoles when compared to the 360 or PS3. Gaming sites have shown that 360 gamers actually play their games twice as much as people who have the Wii. The PS3 can play Blu Ray movies and both the PS3 and the 360 can be used to download HD movies. The Wii doesn’t offer HD movies. It doesn’t offer HD gaming either and the graphics can be downright terrible at times.

I own a PS3 and my family does have a Wii which largely collects dust. The party types of games are hits for parties but that’s about it. A good first party game with poor graphics comes out once in awhile to keep people interested but there really isn’t much to like for a sports gamer other than Tiger Woods. This machine feels like it was entirely created by hype and somehow Nintendo has ridden this propaganda into massive profits that Microsoft and Sony will never come close to matching. Nintendo can make all kinds of claims about the Wii. It’s a great party system! It’s a workout machine! It’s unique since you have to shake your wrist at the screen! Their commercials even show grandparents joining in on the fun. And every time I see that crap I just shake my head. People get suckered into an idea that the Wii is great fun and then this overpriced console gets used once a week and pads Nintendo’s profit margins.

Call me a bitter fanboy and you will be right. I take delight in seeing Wii sales down 40% from last year and I hope they continue to fall. I want the gaming industry to focus on making high quality games with high quality graphics for myself and not some glorified stick figure game for a seven year old. Nintendo is innovative and creative. Nobody can dispute that. Nintendo is also the next gen console leader without question. And that makes no sense to me.

Its not that bad bro. If it wasn't for the wii, the 360 and ps3 wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are now. I can honestly say I wasnt planning on getting a 360 or a ps3 back in 2006. My sights were set on the wii! If Nintendo hadn't pulled me back into gaming, their's no way I would have purchased a 360 or PS3. It is what it is. Nintendo saved gaming! You think apple would be making a ton off gaming for the I-phone if the Wii had of tanked? We were staring down the barrel of a repeat of the 1980's video game crash, if wii sports hadn't went into the phone booth, and came out the number 1 selling game of all-time. If you're sick of the wii-you're sick of gaming....

The Wii just doesn't appeal to me at all. I felt like ranting a little but no need to take me too seriously.

I have been wanting the wii for a while but do worry that we won't use it much

We have both the Wii Active and Wii Fit. The Wii Fit isn't that great and the wife quit using it. She likes the Active and uses it from time to time. That's definitely better than the Wii Fit.

My son liked it for a little. The only game they seemed to like was Mario Galaxy. The new Mario comes out soon but that's very little gaming for a system we've had for over a year. If the system was $149 or less I would be less critical. But it's almost the same price as a 360 or PS3 and is so much less powerful. The Big N is just raking in the cash and I think a lot of people end up a bit disappointed in the Wii.

Forgot to metion Mario Kart. We have had fun with that for a little bit. But again, it goes LONG stretches without any usage.

A rant about how much someone hates (maybe too strong) the Wii. This is a first, Nintendo has done nothing to warrant you hating the system. It's not like how overpriced the PS3 was at first with practically no exclusive titles or how unreliable and defective the 360's hardware has been. Don't take my observations the wrong way though I respect your rant and don't take it very seriously like you said.

I just find it funny that this seems so uncalled for. I imagine two guys standing near one another and one of them is just yelling at the other "Really you're just going to stand there!!" like he's done something terribly wrong yet he hasn't done anything to provoke him. Lol.

I never bought my PS3 at it's original price either. Both the PS3 and 360 were overpriced to begin with. But at least there was some real power there. Sometimes I debate this with my wife who defends the stupid Wii saying you can't compare the systems. And I just say, "You're right. I play the PS3 and the Wii gathers dust. Good thing it's white."

I know the rant is a bit irrational and I shouldn't get this annoyed but the Wii just seems to get too much praise for a system that sells well but people don't play nearly enough.

Just pre-ordered it yesterday for my wife.

Got a good deal - C$49.99 and free shipping but I won't be playing it. I was never into Mario games.

It's called 'innovation'. The Wii had it, the 360/PS3 didn't. The Wii focused on 'fun', the 360/PS3 didn't. Nintentdo attempted to build a console for 'everyone'. MicroSoft and Sony didn't. Ninendo had the better strategy and executed well, and to their credit, the Wii is a really fun console to play on for certain games (Resident Evil 4, Wii Sports, Metroid, and such).

@Superstarchad If the videogaming went down id be happy since im young and the price of games could of been WAYYYY lower than they are.. Come on 70$ for a DVD (But i love them =P)

The Wii has less than 10 games that I like. Of the games I like most of them are made by Nintendo. I prefer to play games with little to no motion controller. I like to sit back & relax when I play a game. If you want to work out pick up some weights.

I own all three consoles. I picked the Wii up last, and it's the one I play the least. I own several games, but I never get pulled away from my 360 or PS3 to bother with them. The Wii is exactly as you described it: a "hype machine." Just go look at the library of Wii games at your local store; you'll see exactly why it's all hype. It's absolutely ridiculous the amount of garbage games that are out, trying to capitalize on the new "gamers" in the market. The sad thing is that some people actually buy "Barbie World Adventures," "Active Super Workout Plus," and "Thomas the Train World." I know these are fictional titles, but they make the point. The Wii is filled with garbage titles. You really have to search just to find one that's even a 50% metacritic score.

It's ok, people have seen through Nintendo as time has progressed. Their sales have trickled off. They won't be this popular next generation unless they bring the hardware and games to the mix. Innovation and marketing won't carry them any further than this.
