16 Team College Playoff = Waste of Time
Posted on January 15, 2009 at 01:08 PM.
Why do so many people always talk about a 16-team playoff? They put all their little scenarios down declaring it brilliant. Every conference champion gets an automatic birth no matter how garbage they are. This kindergarten approach where everyone is special is nonsense. If you want to push for a 16-team playoff, at least take the highest 16 ranked teams that would be interesting to watch in the first round.

Furthermore, it’s never going to happen! If the BCS can’t agree on a four-team playoff, why the hell do you think they would jump to a 16-team playoff? Baby steps people! If you want a playoff, you push for four teams. Once you get that, then you can push for eight. Then 16 if you really think it is necessary. But this desire for a 16-team playoff where every conference champion is special is just a waste of Internet space.

I'll say this; championships should be decided on the field, not by computer formulas and polls. Why shouldn't a team like Utah get a chance to prove themselves and try to win it all? Hell, they beat Alabama senseless, a team from the so-called "best conference in America".

An 8 team playoff could have handled that. But my bigger point is that 16 teams will never happen. You've got to crawl before you can walk. If people want a playoff they need to push for a 4 team one first. They just won't jump from the BCS to a 16 team playoff automatically.

We probably won't see any change in the system for another couple years anyways because of the TV deal. During that time the endless playoff debates and scenarios will be debated on OS and the same arguments will be fought over a million times and mean nothing. Nobody's opinions change in these arguments either so it makes it all pointless.

Here's the idea...you make every conf champ eligible for the nat'l championship, as well as 5 at large teams...it's a pretty simple premise...the NCAA basketball tournament does it, and it would work great for NCAA football...i agree in baby-stepping it, but a 16 team playoff is what's fair and balanced and should be the eventual goal...Most of the teams that are out of the top 10 are not worthy of being nat'l champs andyways and would have no claim for a playoff appearance...a 16 team playoff makes the regular season relevant and conf championship games relevant, as seeding for said playoff would be determined by the current BCS system...Thus, keeping the integrity of the game in check...

To think the viewers opinions are irrelevant is ludicrous...we NEED the average joe complaining about the system, or it will never change...we NEED AD's and coaches and players to come out and say a playoff is the way to go...Money talks...We need ppl like Pete Carroll saying a playoff is needed...We need Urban Meyer complaining about the system...We need pioneers to make this happen...Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden saying a playoff is needed would be a huge step forward and could help change opinions...Don't try to silence the crowd, Rudy; try to make it louder...it will take time for change, that's why we need to be making sure changes happen when tv deals are expiring...start making your noise today, not when the TV deals are being renegotiated...these ppl must HEAR you to know change is wanted...
