Baseball Video Games Sales Down Through 2 Weeks
Posted on March 26, 2011 at 08:16 AM.
MLB 11 The Show has sold quite poorly compared to MLB 10 The Show on the PS3 and worse than MLB 09 as well. Through two weeks MLB 11 The Show has only sold 130,000 copies per vgchartz (http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/sales/49246/mlb-11-the-show/). MLB 10 had sold 219,000 through two weeks and MLB 09 had sold 157,000. Despite the fact the game added analog controls gamers have chosen to either wait or not buy the game.

MLB 2K11 hasn't fared much better. On the 360 2K11 has sold 82,000 copies while they sold 89,000 for 2K10 and a whopping 172,000 for 2K9. A very poor trend here. The PS3 versions still show a low amount of sales but are slightly higher than last year. 2K11 has sold 40,000 on the PS3 while they only did 33,000 the previous year but did do 48,000 for 2K9. Clearly MLB 2K9 sold the most copies and the people burned by that experience have not returned.

Overall some disappointing numbers for baseball gaming overall.

Now week 3 sales, reported by vgchartz, show that MLB 10 outsold 11 by at least 104,000 copies... Wow! I think MLB 10 was more promoted last year (BestBuy had kiosks setup prior to the game launch; this year, it was setup afterwards); also this year's box cover was similar to last year's (customer thinks it is the same old version?). But why not the same sales levels as MLB 09? People bored with baseball games? Other sports games are more fun? I thought I read some where that one of the main goals of this year's baseball game was to attract more sports gamers that have not bought the MLB The Show series in the past. Well, as more weekly sales numbers are being reported, it's looking likely that SCEA not only has failed on that, but also lost gamers from the past two years! A small window is now open as the MLB season opening is stirring some excitement/interest in baseball; the only way to increase sales is by positive word of mouth recommendations now.

I agree with you about the cover. I can't understand why you would use the same cover athlete and have a similar looking cover. At least make the cover a ton different as it could confuse the customer.
