The best passing offense versus the worst defense against the pass played out just as expected Sunday, as Peyton Manning and the Colts shredded the Chiefs through the air en route to a 24-21 victory at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Manning set the tone early, with the first passing play of the game being a 51-yard strike to Austin Collie.
"We knew coming in they were struggling against the pass, and we tried to take advantage of it as often as possible," Colts WR Reggie Wayne said.
For the most part, Manning had oodles of time to throw as his offensive line dominated the Chiefs' front 7 for much of the game.
Indianapolis focused their efforts on defense on slowing KC's rushing attack, and it worked — Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones only combined for 62 rushing yards. Matt Cassel caught the Colts off-guard by rushing for 52 yards on his own.
"The tape definitely didn't show he could move as well as he did," Colts DE Dwight Freeney said.
The Chiefs were able to hang around by getting key stops on third down against the Colts' offense, and normally reliable kicker Adam Vinatieri missed two field goals.
"We escaped some situations with misses," Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said. "You can't rely on that every game, though."
The Chiefs pulled to within three late in the game with Charles' 6-yard TD run, but the onside kick was recovered by Indianapolis and with only one timeout remaining for KC, the Colts sealed a victory with Joseph Addai's nice 11-yard run to pick up a first down.
