How many quarterbacks have thrown for over 450 yards while shouldering the brunt of the blame for a loss?
Alex Smith did just that, connecting on a flurry of deep balls that gave him 468 passing yards for the day. Unfortunately for the 49ers, he also completed four passes to the Chiefs, with two being returned for TDs in KC's 31-28 home victory.
"There's no need to sugar-coat it — I blew it," Smith said after the game. "It doesn't matter how many yards I throw for if I throw four picks."
The Chiefs built a big 21-3 lead on the strength of their running game and their ballhawking defense. But the 49ers chipped away by getting a safety and a long touchdown strike to Ted Ginn Jr. before halftime.
"We felt like we dominated the first half, but looked up at the scoreboard and only led by nine," Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "It was kind of disappointing."
Both defenses controlled the scoreless third quarter until Thomas Jones broke another long run for a touchdown to make it 28-12.
"I think we thought we had the game won after that touchdown," head coach Todd Haley said. "We forgot it takes 60 minutes to win in the NFL."
The capacity crowd at Arrowhead watched in disbelief as the 49ers charged back with two touchdowns and two 2-point conversions with less than 4 minutes to go.
"Too many mistakes that led to big plays," Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said. "Too many unnecessary risks."
But the 49ers left just enough time for Matt Cassel and the Chiefs, who wasted no time getting into field goal range when Dwayne Bowe broke free on a 64-yard catch-and-run.
Ryan Succop sealed the win with a 25-yard chip shot field goal. Succop has kicked the game-winning field goal in both Chiefs wins this season.
"It's nice being the hero and not the goat." Succop said. "We kickers have to enjoy it while it lasts."
