Background...I'm old enough to have bought and played Madden '92 and, like most players then, I regularly scored 100+ points, did laps around the field with mindless defenders in hot pursuit, and exploited every AI glitch I found. I viewed the CPU as stupid and played the for no other reason that to abuse it for a few months per year and then I'd be done. Then came Madden '99 on the PC.

Online Franchise....Madden '99 was the most amazing gaming experience I ever had. For the first time i was connected to other players via a video game that weren't sitting within 3 feet of me. Every night at around the same time we'd all log in and start executing live trades, FA signings, and playing our games. Chatting on the screen and talking via RogerWilco....it just brought a whole new aspect to the game for me. I have never played a single offline game vs the CPU in Madden since. Ever. I would try...I would start games...but it was so lifeless. So predictable. And even when the CPU did do something good....it usually just felt it was because of a RoboStud type play where they broke 87 tackles or something.

The revamped career mode and emphasis on online play this year has finally made "Franchise Mode" appealing to me.
