Julio Jones, wtf?
Posted on April 29, 2011 at 08:55 AM.
Sometimes the draft goes the way fans want it to.. and then other times, it has the potential to blow up in your face. Don't believe me? Just look at the debacle that transpired last night that was the 6th pick for the Atlanta Falcons.

What was the logic in sacrificing your entire draft for a WR who the scouts and experts say cannot catch a football? Why get hoodwinked into giving away your draft and totally "drop the ball" (pun intended) on a guy that may or may not pan out?

I hope I'm wrong. I hope Julio Jones can be the explosive WR to help Matt Ryan and that offense get even better. If he's a bust, then Atlanta Falcons fans everywhere will be out for blood. Explosiveness is great and all for a WR but it does no good if he can't catch the damn ball.

I am a Falcons fan and I wasn't feeling the pick either, but I don't believe he'll be a bust; far from it. Actually I believe he'll be a huge addition to our offensive. Scout compare to the HOFer Michael Irvin with his ability, size, and skill. As far as his hands, he did play most of the season with it fractured so he's definitely tough. The reason I kind of don't like the move was because we need help on defense more than offense and we gave up 5 future draft picks. He will be big with Atlanta's already solid offense.

I'm a Browns fan. On behalf of myself and the good citizens of the city of Cleveland, we thank you for the draft picks. We need all the help we can get.

@rondoman That's a valid point. There's no guarantee that Jones will ever develop into an elite receiver. If he does, that'll be great for Atlanta, but if he doesn't they don't have draft picks next year to help improve their team. Like you said, the cost was way too high.

The Falcons have been drafting defensive guys for the past 2 years and they feel like they have the depth to compete. The only real weakness on the team was the D-line play (outside of Abraham) and the Nickel corner. I love the move. The Browns already messed up one pick when the reached for Phil Taylor.

It was a good pick for the Falcons. Too me he will be more like T.O. and Michael Irvin. Big, strong, explosive players. The Falcons offense is getting old and outside of Roddy White the other Wrs are garbage.

Ok let me chime in here. While I do like the move. I don't mind the 2011 picks they gave away for him. Its the 2012 1st round pick that I feel was too much. BUT Julio was the 1A or 1B receiver in the nation. Nobody else was even close to him or A.J. Green. Absolute men against boys. Even when he went against 1st Rd league talent (Patrick Petterson) he dominated. When you look at the Falcons offense, as a defense you are gonna have to double Roddy White or Gonzales. Which will leave Julio in single coverage all year long. Tell me what #2 two CB is going to shut down Julio? Can you even name a #2 CB for that matter. LOL Him dropping the ball was just like that year everybody was on T.O. for leading the NFL in drops but he lead the NFL in TD receptions as well. I mean hell Julio was the go to guy, almost every ball came to him. Of course he's gonna drop some. Julio had 78 catches last year, next closest receiver had 38. Cmon Man! I am almost picturing 98 Viking caliber offense for the Falcons this year.

Oh yea an Cleveland picked absolutely nobody noteworthy with those picks. Probably the worst draft of the day. They should have just kept the pick and got Julio lol

"Entire draft?" That's quite an exaggeration.

First of all, they swapped first round picks in 2011. In addition to that, they gave up a 1st-rounder, a 2nd-rounder and two 4th-rounders.

The only picks I'm worried about are the 2nd this year and the 1st rounder we gave up for 2012; I always hate trading future 1sts.

The fourth rounders don't concern me too terribly much. Dimitroff has drafted enough depth these past years that I don't think the 4th rounders will be critical.

Now, one can argue whether or not Jones is going to be an elite WR in the league. (Personally I think he'll be excellent.) But this notion that the Falcons gave up way too much is not entirely truthful.

@mwjr Nice response. Maybe I should have stated "quite a bit" of draft picks instead of saying entire draft. I was just expressing my opinion, although I do realize I may have not been totally accurate. I do hope that Jones becomes an excellent NFL player though.
