NBA Elite 11: Where the Demo Went Wrong
Posted on September 27, 2010 at 12:46 PM.
You finish downloading the NBA Elite 11 demo, press play, and are treated to an HD intro video of the game's cover athlete, Kevin Durant. You have to be a corpse not to be excited for what this demo has in store. Sadly, the experience all goes downhill from there, as the on court gameplay feels more like something suited for the Play Station 1 or Dreamcast than a next gen experience.

Now don't get me wrong. There are some things that are very intuitive about what the developers of Elite 11 are trying. The control scheme is definitely different from any we've seen before in a basketball game. But is this change for the better, or for the worse? Most gamers feel that it has been for the worse, and ultimately I'd have to agree.

The most glaring thing is the quality of the graphics. The graphics simply are not next gen, period. Playing the demo feels more like something from the latter stages of the Play Station 2 graphics-wise. Players models, lighting, player movement all are not what we've come to expect from next gen sports gaming. This is unacceptable, and enough to deter many people away from the game right off the bat.

Moving on, the on court gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. There are no signature styles. Superstars do not play as superstars. Very rarely, if at all, will you see Kobe play like Kobe, Rondo make a Rondo-esque play, KG block a shot with the authority you see him do in real life. For a game which claims to be the realest basketball game ever, this is a huge notch down.

Playing the game, it's hard to shake the feeling that this is a definite step back from where basketball gaming has progressed this gen. It's a definite step back from Live 10. Quite frankly, it's nowhere in the ballpark of what 2K has to offer, and the sales will likely reflect that fact.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are some things which Elite 11 does pretty good. The ESPN presentation seems solid. Commentary is also solid. The sample size for the demo is pretty good, and the Become Legendary mode seems to be pretty in depth for a career mode. But all in all, and this seems like a giant step back for the folks at EA. Ultimately, the question has to be asked "Is this change for the better or for the worse" and it seems as if I, along with other consumers, agree that this is a change for the worse from Live to Elite.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this is the worst basketball game ever, nor am I saying that this is an out and out failure. But is it progress from Live 10? Is it truly a 'next-gen' basketball experience? And most importantly for the folks at EA, is it going to be enough to even make a dent into the sales of the Jordan Juggernaut at 2K? From what I've seen in the demo, and in other's opinions of the demo, it is going to be a long few months coming up here for EA and the developers of Elite 11.

EDIT (9 PM ET): With news of EA's delay of Elite 11 until 2011, it's evident that EA saw that this was just not acceptable to be released as a next-gen product. To me this has to go down as an embarrassment for EA Sports, and they should scrap this cycle altogether and be prepared to go back to work for Live/Elite 12.

I am saying that, you may not want to admit but this game is worse than Live 05. It is horrible, also I seen this video first on Facebook as a friend posted from the original Youtube video, Hilarious....

Honestly there were some things that I liked in the demo, but the good outweighed the bad, and apparently there was just too much bad for EA to release it. Shocking.
