Hardworking Roadrunners fall 56-46 to the Houston Cougars in Non-Conference Play
SAN ANTONIO - After a narrow victory against the UTEP Miners, UTSA head back home hoping to secure an upset victory against the Houston Cougars in the American Athletic Conference. In the end, there was more than enough offense to secure a victory, but as the old adage says, "Defense wins championships", something the Roadrunners haven't done much lately.
On most Saturdays, if your starting quarterback throws over 500 yards with 5 touchdowns, like what Tucker Carter, replacing the injured Eric Soza, you would expect a victory. Unfortunately for the Roadrunners, Houston signal caller Billy Cosh threw over 500 yards and 4 touchdowns (as well as running for two scores).
Houston opened up a 14-7 lead after the first quarter thanks to effective ball movement across the field, leading to easy runs by Cosh and running back Kenneth Farrow. Their defense took over the second quarter as two mistakes by Carter via interception and fumble inside the UTSA 35 yard line led to easy scores by the Cougars in the short field. Towards the end of the first half, the Roadrunners were marching down the field, and were within the 4 yard line with 20 seconds to go, but horrible time management led to a last second timeout and field goal by placekicker Sean Ianno.
The third quarter started with more Houston dominance over the Roadrunners as 2 Cosh touchdown passes opened up the lead to 42-13. Carter and company however had a strong showing in their last two drives, and two Carter-to-Harrison connections shrunk the lead slightly to 42-26 (UTSA missed a 2-point conversion).
The final quarter was an entertaining affair for both offenses, at the expense of both Defensive Coordinators. Houston and UTSA traded scores to open up the 4th quarter, and a quick drive by the UTSA offense ended with a David Glasco 1 yard run to trim the deficit to 10 with a chance to recover an onside kick. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners failed to recover, and like the other drives by Houston, it ended with 7 points. Tucker Carter and Kenny Harrison padded some stats and broke team records in the process with another TD connection with 1:45 to go, but UTSA couldn't recover their 2nd onside kick of the afternoon, and the Cougars milked the rest of the clock for a 10-point victory.
Despite the loss, fans of the UTSA Roadrunners are very fascinated by their new Offensive Coordinator, and although it's still early in the season, the UTSA offense isn't to blame for the mounting losses by the team. And as usual, Coach Nakano managed to sneak out of the dressing room before local reporters could have a chat with him. Needless to say however, Head Coach Larry Coker has unearthed an interesting coaching prospect into the UTSA ranks. It will be interesting if Coker and Nakano can continue to score points, but more importantly, if the defensive side of the ball can stop their opponents from scoring and give the team a chance to win.

PS: Yes, I know I got the team headers mixed up, I'll make sure that doesn't happen for the next home game...
