Its no surprise NBA 2k's MyPlayer/MyCareer modes have grown to be extremely stale. These game modes have a lot of potential, yet they fail to deliver on their promise most years.
I have been brainstorming a few ideas that could make the Career game mode one of the best across all sports games. And with the increased capabilities of the next-gen systems, it should be possible to implement some of these ideas.
- Let us choose between a casual or realistic progression system. In the casual progression system, players will be able to buy VC and boost attributes just like you are able to do it today. But for hardcore basketball fans who want a more realistic experience, the Realistic Progression option will be available. This option would make the players progress based on drills, in-game experience (similar to MLB The Show, which has the PERFECT progression system in my opinion), and situation (sitting behind a great player, or playing for a great coach).
- If you choose the Realistic Progression option, you will have to choose your parents in a random generator, similar to the old Madden Superstar mode. This would determine your genetics (height/weight), athletic abilities (speed/jumping), and mental abilities (Basketball IQ/Awareness). However, if you choose Casual Progression, you will be able to choose your own genetics, just like you can now.
- Start us off in an 16 team, NCAA-style tournament (Of course it cant be real NCAA teams). This will determine your base attributes (On a letter scale) and play style, instead of us choosing them. Let us choose between a small program and big programs, as well as our class:
- If you choose a smaller program, your performances (good or bad) wont have as much of an effect on your draft stock as they would at a big program. It would be harder to secure yourself as a high draft pick coming out of a smaller program.
- If you choose a big program, you are constantly in the spotlight, therefore your performances have a tremendous effect on your draft stock. But, you have a better chance to go high in the draft.
- To go high in the draft coming out of a small school, you'd have to have better stats than you would at a big program.
- If you choose an underclassmen, then your OVR rating will be lower (depending on how you perform in the tourney), but you will progress faster (Realistic Progression) due to potential. But your mental/consistency attributes will be significantly lower.
- If you choose an upperclassmen, your OVR rating will be higher, but you will progress slower. However, your mental/consistency attributes will be higher due to more experience.
- Bring in the NBA Combine, which would a series of drills that would be used to determine your EXACT attributes on a number scale. Certain drills would be easier or harder for you depending on genetics received from your parents. Drills would include the 3/4 court sprint, Lane Agility, Vertical and Bench Press.
- Pre-Draft Interviews. You get interviewed by all teams in your draft range. Get brought in by teams interested in you for Pre-Draft workouts.
- The Draft. Include Draft Day trades, and NO DUPLICATE PICKS (If I go #1 Overall, then Anthony Davis SHOULD NOT be going #1 overall also, that is just stupid). Include scouting report based on the way you actually played (If you shoot a ridiculous amount of shots, the you should be labeled a Volume Shooter, or if you fail to get your teammates involved, that should be included. Same with defensive scouting report).
- Bring back the Summer League. You are giving 5 games to EARN a spot on the roster through good play. If you do well, you will make the roster, if not D-LEAGUE.
-You may earn minutes up to a certain extent, depending on your teams situation. If you are a SG drafted by the Lakers, you probably wont be starting until Kobe retires. Same for any star in the league. However, sitting behind All-Star/Hall Of Fame caliber players speed up your development. Of course, if you are on a team that lacks in your position, then you will be able to take over the starting spot easier. If you did well through out all the previous events, and end up in the right place, you should be able to start right away.
- Endorsements, dont limit us to just Nike and Jordan. Throw in Adidas, Spaulding, Peak, Li-Ning etc.
- Have VC for player attributes but thats it. VC SHOULD NOT be used as salary.
- Player relationships should be developed. Different players would reach out to you, and you should be able to reach out to them. This should open up opportunities in the future to team up with them to create Superteams, like the current trend in the NBA.
- Scheduled Drills throughout the season (similar to The Show), for attribute boosts if you are playing the Realistic Progression.
- Offseason Workouts, you could reach out to players that you have built relationships with to workout over the summer. Depending on their strengths, they would help you develop some of your attributes, and vice versa. For example, lets say I'm a 3pt specialist, and I choose to workout with MKG. His defensive ability will help me develop my defensive ability, and my shooting ability will help him develop his shooting ability. The offseason is where most of the development should happen.
- Give us 3 post game interview questions, and the ability to change voices (Anyone else growing tired of the current one?).
Overall, I just want a more realistic approach, something that will make you work at the game. It bothers me the way people brag about scoring 60 per game and 99 overall as a rookie. As a hardcore basketball fan, I want a mode that is challenging and realistic, with depth on top of it all.

nice ideas, i like how some of these are from other games..would be nice to have the best ideas all placed in one game.

i think these are great ideas, but a lil late considering the game comes out in like 2 months

Don't care for the realistic progression. I don't see why time would be spent coding the option for this when a player can just ignore VC altogether and play that way. I do like the idea behind the player relationships.

I agree most of all with offseason progression. In NHL you get a small amount of skill points after games but you get a lot more to use in the off season. That is more realistic for any sport.

All sounds good except for the parents feature. It'll be fine if we could choose the types of parents. I remember in Madden 07, I had to keep randomizing it...maybe I was doing it wrong, but i don't know, I was much younger. If any game's career mode has gotten stale, it's MLB The Show's, the career mode that got me begging for other franchises to include career modes.

Of course you can keep randomizing to choose your parents, just like in Madden. But choosing the exact type of your parents would pretty much defeat the purpose of the feature, since everyone would choose the prototypical parents to make some athlete from out of this world. I just like the realism of the random parents, you cant choose your genetics or height in real life, so I feel like this would be an appreciated feature among hardcore fans.
