20/21 Season Game 53 Colorado Avalanche @ Washington Capitals
The Avs began a three game road trip out east taking on the Capitals in DC. In a matchup between two of the league's best teams, Colorado absolutely dominated. The first period struggled to find a good pace, as the referees called a tight game and half the period was played on special teams. Neither team was able to score though, and the game was scoreless heading into the first intermission. The second period was all Avs, starting with a goal on a deflection by Galchenyuk just over a minute in. Five minutes later the Avs doubled their lead with a little bit of luck, Gabriel Landeskog's tipped shot deflected off Dillon's stick and in. Less than two minutes later it was 3-0 Avs when Nichushkin found Makar joining the rush late and the Calder winner beat Lundqvist off the post and in. Colorado capped off the period with a 4th goal coming in the last minute, Galchenyuk's second of the night. The free agent signing has been red hot lately, and he will be getting a big pay raise where ever he decides to sign next season. Avs management is expected to try and make it work to keep him with the team. The third period was much of the same for Colorado. MacKinnon scored on the powerplay just over a minute in. Both teams were penalized four times tonight. MacKinnon's goal would chase Lundqvist from the game. The Avs completed the rout with a Nazem Kadri goal midway through the third as Grubauer posted 27 saves to shutout his former team. The Avs play the first of a back to back Tuesday night on Long Island.
