20/21 Season Game 47 Colorado Avalanche @ Ottawa Senators
Colorado concluded their 5 game road trip in the Canadian capital against the Ottawa Senators. The shot totals in the game tell a story that it was low event and boring, but the goaltending was so awful that the game turned into a 9 goal shootout. Colorado dominated the opening period, controlling the puck and the shot attempts. Matt Murray was strong early but Colorado blitzed him with under 5 minutes to go in the first. MacKinnon opened the scoring with a top shelf snap shot that beat Murray short side. On the ensuing faceoff the Avs entered the zone and cycled the puck to the blueline where Ryan Graves unleashed a slapshot that Burakovsky got a stick on to tip past the former Penguins Stanley Cup winner. Colorado kept up the attacking style in the second period, and added a third goal by J.T. Compher on the rush. Ottawa struck back late in the frame, the speedster Michael Grabner generating a 2 on 1 and finishing the play. The Avs looked to shut things down in the third and added to their lead with an Alex Galchenyuk wrap around. With under two minutes to play, Donskoi buried a pass from MacKinnon to extend the lead to 5-1 and chase Murray from the net. The game got sloppy from then on, Ottawa scoring two quick goals to get back in it, then Galchenyuk getting his second of the night with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker. The Avs return home to face the Kings after two nights off.
