20/21 Season Game 46 Colorado Avalanche @ Toronto Maple Leafs
The Avs continued their long Canadian road trip, facing off against their second straight Original Six foe, Toronto. This was a game both penalty killing units and goalie Philipp Grubauer would like to forget. The Leafs started the game buzzing, needing only two and a half minutes to take the lead through William Nylander. Five minutes after taking the lead, Toronto handed the Avs their first of three powerplays on the night, and former Leafs Center Kadri tied the game on a nice passing play by the second powerplay unit. The game tightened up heading into the middle frame, but midway through the period the Avs got their second powerplay goal of the night. This time it was Joonas Donskoi who finished off another nice play by the second unit. Just 5 minutes later, Toronto got a powerplay goal of their own to tie the game courtesy of Zach Hyman. Just a minute later, the Avs regained their advantage when Brandon Saad tipped in a Ryan Graves wrist shot to put the score at 3-2. Just when Colorado thought they would take a lead into the final frame, Toronto tied the game up with 33 seconds remaining in the second on a back door tap in from Nic Petan. It was a back and forth game in the third, both teams getting shots and chances. The Leafs were the first to capitalize, a changeup shot from Jimmy Vesey that beat Grubauer through the five hole. With just under 2 minutes to play in the game the Leafs got their insurance goal from Denis Malgin. The Avs added a late tally from rookie Martin Kaut but it wasn't enough to keep them from losing a second straight. The Avs will conclude their 5 game road trip Saturday night in Ottawa, where it is expected Pavel Francouz will get the start in net.
