20/21 Season Game 42 New York Rangers @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avs concluded their holiday season home stand against original six foe New York Rangers. The Rangers have been a gritty team this season and they showed it tonight. They were aggressive in the neutral zone and the forecheck all night and made it extremely difficult for the Avalanche to generate sustained offensive pressure. The first period ended scoreless and with both teams having less than ten shots apiece. The Avs began the second on the PK and despite the Rangers best efforts they were able to keep the game scoreless. Midway through the period the Avs took the lead against the run of play. Burakovsky gathered a loose puck at the top of the circle and fired a wrist shot through traffic for his 20th of the season. The secondary scoring provided by players like Burakovsky to supplement the consistent output from the top line is a big reason the Avs have the best record in the NHL. The Rangers kept checking aggressively and outshooting Colorado, but couldn't find a way to beat Grubauer, who was outstanding all night. With less than 2 minutes to go in the middle frame it was the Avs big guns who executed a nice passing play finished off by Rantanen to double their lead. The Rangers threw the kitchen sink at the Avs in the third period but Grubauer stood firm and finished with the shutout. The Avs hit the road for a 5 game all Canadian road trip.
