20/21 Season Game 41 San Jose Sharks @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avs took on the Sharks in Denver for their first game in 2021. The Sharks started the game swarming the Avalanche offensively and defensively. Colorado had a tough time generating any offense for the entire first period. San Jose's opportunistic play was awarded as they took the lead on a rebound goal by Marcus Sorensen. The Avs continued to find it difficult to generate offense into the second period. They finally got the chance they needed late in the frame when San Jose's aggressive stick checking eventually landed them in the box. Colorado, who has been hot on the powerplay as of late, tied the game on Brandon Saad's 7th of the season. The third period began with the score tied at 1 but just 34 seconds in Devon Toews intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and rushed forward to beat Dubnyk on a breakaway for a Colorado lead. The Sharks bounced right back and tied the game again on another rebound goal, this time by Ryan Donato. Both teams traded chances for the remainder of the third but the game would head to OT. One minute into the extra period, San Jose handed the Avs a golden opportunity by taking another penalty but they stood strong and killed it off. With just over a minute and a half to go before a shootout, Kadri found Makar wide open in the neutral zone for a breakaway and the young defenseman put the puck past Dubnyk for an Avalanche win.
