20/21 Season Game 36 Chicago Blackhawks @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche rounded out their four game homestand against Central Division opponent Chicago. Chicago started the game on the front foot, generating more shots and chances than the Avs. Grubauer looked sharp early despite his rough go last time out. Midway through the first Chicago would capitalize on an Avs penalty, Kubalik scoring his 9th of the season on the powerplay. The Avs entered the second period trailing but answered back right away. MacKinnon won the draw back to Devon Toews. Toews gained the line and dumped the puck in for Rantanen to retrieve. Rantanen played a slick pass in front for MacKinnon to bury his 18th of the season and continue the red hot offense coming from the Avalanche top line. The teams went back and forth for the rest of the period, but neither were able to find a go ahead goal. The third period continued to be a battle, and Chicago would find the breakthrough just under three minutes in, courtesy of free agent signing Mattias Janmark. The Avs wouldn't go away and answered right back on the next shift, something they have made a habit of lately. Red hot Andre Burakovsky gathered a rebound in front of Delia and fired past the out of position Chicago goalie to tie the game. Both teams fought hard to find a winner but the game would end up going to overtime. Rather than seeing the blistering pace of 3 on 3 hockey in overtime, much of it was played on special teams with both teams taking penalties and neither being able to find a game winner. The game went into a shootout and Nazem Kadri scored the only goal to hand the Avs a 3-2 win.
