20/21 Season Game 34 New York Islanders @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avs finally have somewhat of a homestand for what feels like the first time this season. The Islanders came to Denver for the second of four straight at home for Colorado. The game began with the type of play you would expect in a game involving the Islanders. Lots of tight checking and neutral zone play, not many shots on net or scoring chances. The Avs were able to enjoy the lion's share of what chances did come around, and finally took the lead with just over a minute remaining in the opening period. The Islanders took over for most of the second, playing much of it in the Avalanche zone. Colorado's penalty killers played well throughout, killing off 2 New York powerplays in the period. The third period was more back and forth than the first two frames. The Avs found themselves in penalty trouble late though, but the killers and Grubauer answered the call again to kill off two more Islander man advantages. Shortly after the second PK, Mikko Rantanen finished off a nice passing play between him and MacKinnon to get the Avs an insurance goal with less than a minute to go in the game. The Islanders won the ensuing faceoff and immediately pulled former Avs netminder Varlamov. The red hot MacKinnon grabbed an empty net goal to send the Avs fans home happy with a 3-0 shutout win. Up next is Montreal on Saturday night, when the Avs will wear Nordiques jerseys to throwback to the origins of the franchise.
