20/21 Season Game 31 Edmonton Oilers @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avs returned to home ice after a successful road trip out East. Tonight they took on old Northwest division rival Edmonton in a matchup between electric centers McDavid and MacKinnon. The first period was evenly contested. Edmonton outshot Colorado but neither team was able to get on the board. The second period continued in the same fashion. Exactly halfway through the game, Bellemare found Saad in front with a nice pass, and the former Chicago winger beat Mike Smith with a backhand to give Colorado the lead. A few minutes later Colorado was able to get the puck out of the defensive zone to a streaking Donskoi, who caught the Oilers D in a line change and beat Smith five hole to double the Avs lead. The Avs would give Edmonton an early powerplay in the third, they killed the penalty but with the puck still in the d zone, Kyle Turris tipped in an Adam Larsson shot to half the defecit. The Avs quickly regained their lead when MacKinnon won the ensuing faceoff back to Makar. The young defenseman, returning from injury, found Mikko Rantanen who pulled up on the right side and fired a wrist shot that deflected off a skate and in for a 3-1 Colorado lead. The Avs rode a stellar performance by Grubauer the rest of the way to secure their 23rd win of the season.
