20/21 Season Game 19 Washington Capitals @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avlanche welcomed the Washington Capitals to Denver in a matchup between two of the league's best teams in the early going of the season. The game had the type of intensity you would expect from two playoff contenders. It was all Washington in the first period, as they outskated the Avs to a 1-0 lead. Grubauer failed to track a loose puck in front as Kuznetsov put it past the former Capitals goalie. Starting the middle frame down by 1, the Avs picked up the pace and tied the game via a Galchenyuk goal resulting from their trademark forecheck pressure. Continuing to gain momentum, the Avs took the lead late in the 2nd period on a Bellemare breakaway goal. The Capitals stormed back in the 3rd. Backstrom showed off his smooth hands as he controlled the puck in close and beat Grubauer to tie it. With the game tied, the Capitals took a penalty to put the Avs on the powerplay. The Avs couldn't convert with the man advantage, despite good puck movement and several shots on Lundqvist. However the Avs were still putting pressure on as the penalty expired and Rantanen snuck one past the Swedish veteran to put the Avs in front. The Capitals would keep fighting, and tied the game again with just over 5 minutes remaining to play. It wouldn't be enough though, when less than a minute after the tying goal Makar skated the puck out of his own zone and found Landeskog streaking through the neutral zone. The red hot Avalanche captain beat his compatriot glove side for the game winner.
