20/21 Season Game 13 Colorado Avalanche @ Calgary Flames
Colorado traveled North of the border to face old Northwest division rival Calgary. The Flames took the first game between these teams in a 5-4 overtime thriller. Tonight was another high scoring affair but this time the Avalanche came out on top thanks to a monster night from their top line of MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Landeskog. The first period ended scoreless, with the shots 13-4 in favor of the Avalanche. Calgary did a nice job of stick checking and limiting high quality scoring chances. The Flames defensive work payed off early in the second when Johnny Gaudreau put them up just 22 seconds in. The Avs answered less than 3 minutes later, tying the game on a goal by the red hot Andre Burakovsky. A little more than a minute later, the Avs found themselves in the lead after a textbook breakout play and some nice passing by the top line ended with MacKinnon finding the back of the net. Later in the middle frame the Avs took the first penalty of the night and payed for it when Noah Hanifin scored from a faceoff play to tie the game. The 3rd period began scoreless and was back and forth until about midway through when the Avs top line took the game over and scored twice in the span of 24 seconds. The Avalanche added a 5th goal with five minutes remaining, courtesy of Joonas Donskoi. The Avs head to Vancouver tomorrow night, looking to extend their winning streak to 7 games.
