NBA Baller Beats is the first full-body motion based NBA video game that lets you perform like a pro using a real basketball.
Yes, it sounds corny as hell; yes, I was skeptical too. In fact, I almost didn't hop into the E3 test station to try it out, because I thought it was ridiculous.
I stepped inside and after a few Microsoft Kinect commands, I was dribbling to the beat of C’Mon Catch ‘Em By Surprise by Tiesto vs. Diplo feat. Busta Rhymes. I was dribbling with my left, then dribbling with my right. Crossing over to the left, crossing over to the right. Crossing over between my legs from left to right … and then, it happened. I realized I need to work on my right. Ouch, reality has settled in.
You see, this isn't all about dribbling a basketball to music, it is about making sure you use the correct basketball move to the beat of a selected song. There are 20 different moves in the game, which you can practice in the Move School. There is also a multiplayer mode, in which you can go head-to-head with up to eight players. TNT analyst Kenny Smith is featured in the game, as he hosts the extensive in-game tutorial. The game has three difficulty levels and ranks the songs on difficulty as well.
There are 30 in-game tracks, including hip-hop, rock and old school classics. (15 of them have been confirmed and listed below)
- “Amazing” – Kanye West
- “Another One Bites the Dust” – Queen
- “Bangarang” – Skrillex
- “Blue Sky” – Common
- “Bust A Move” – Young MC
- “Chillin” – Wale ft. Lady Gaga
- “C’Mon Catch ‘Em By Surprise” – Tiesto vs. Diplo ft. Busta Rhymes
- “It’s Tricky” – Run DMC

- “Obstacle 1” - Interpol

- “Slam” – Onyx
- “Stylo” – Gorillaz
- “Tightrope” – Janelle Monae
After your round, you are given a score, as well as quite a few pictures that were taken of you during your session. This game will obviously need some room, a hard surface (although Majesco states the ball bounces fine on carpet) and earplugs for anyone living below you.
As hard as it is to believe, it was fun and I was sweating, after my session. Don't knock it, until you try it.
The game ships exclusively on the Xbox 360 on September 11th. It also comes packaged with an official NBA game ball replica from Spalding for $59.99. If you pre-order at GameStop, you will receive a free assorted 3-pack of NBA Fathead 5x7 Tradeables featuring top NBA players, while supplies last.
