If You Could Be 2K Sports
Posted on November 21, 2011 at 11:19 AM.
I ask this question in relation to the College Hoops 2K12 mock review that was released last week. College Hoops was discontinued because the company wanted to down size. So I ask the following question, (based on trying to keep college hoops)

If you were 2K which of the following franchises would you eliminate and why:

NBA 2k
MLB 2k
Top Spin

It's hard between Top Spin and MLB 2k. I would keep making NBA 2k as it has great sales and reviews. Mlb 2k could be let go of if The Show was made for both PS3 and 360 but where its PS3 exclusive, they might want to keep that for MLB fans with 360. To be honest I know nothing about Top Spin, and am not into Tennis at all so I would probably ditch that one. But yeah. cmon 2k give us a college hoops title

I agree with you Top Spin is okay, but when your audience misses a title like College Hoops something has to be done. I can see keeping the other two because NBA well enough said and MLB the lack of competition.

I think it would be MLB2K. I mean, 2k came out and said that they were losing a lot on the franchise, however, they may have lost more doing College Hoops. It's tough to say, I know that Top Spin is regularly a decent game and the better sim tennis game out there. I think they've also lost a lot of ground in their sports games due to how large 2k has become as a company itself. Between it's work with games like Bioshock and it's other half of the company (Take-Two), it's likely that their resources are spread fairly thin. They constantly repeat in shareholder teleconferences that they are losing money only to have a few games (NBA 2k, Red Dead, GTA) keep it's value up. The company as a whole needs restructured and it needs to learn where to spend it's money. They should drop the exclusive deal with the MLB and lose a little ground on that market while saving itself the costs of an exclusive, combine all games under on name (2k is probably the best name for them), and then focus on expanding the lineups that people want. In the end, they can sell it (like long rumored) to EA or become an even bigger player in the Publisher field.

Anyways, as far as NCAA Basketball titles goes, I think there's some issues tied up with EA owning certain rights that 2k would need to get back in the game. Either way, I hope we get a NCAA hoops game back soon, it was one of my favorite games to look forward to each year.

none of them.
The MLB series has shown constant improvement the past 3 years. The game is fun. I also think 2k has found a nice balance between a true sim and a casual experience. plus being innovative with the swing stick and pitching shows that2k puts thought into development.

Tennis is a solid title, plus they release a new title every few years. Tennis is a popular sport world wide, so Im sure their sales will keep their tennis title in their development cycle.

NBA2k series, nothing needs to be said about this series. I still dont understand all the backlash. Online needs work, but gameplay wise its a great sim. 2k continusoly improves gameplay, and seems to incorporate alot of what the users want in a sim. Thast why i dodnt understand all the backlash.

2k needs to bring back the college series. maybe they shoudld explore a development/release cycle similar to the tennis series.

If I were 2K, I would get the same people that make the Bigs which is also put out under the 2K umbrella to do the graphics for the MLB game. I would ditch Top Spin for NCAA basketball and equip it with a Online Dynasty mode. I don't see how Top Spin is more profitable than NCAA basketball unless NCAA is asking for some crazy amount for the license.

I agree with all comments, but I do think 2K needs to trim somewhere, I think them going with Bioshock and others have hurt the sports side of the company. They need to figure how to lock up College Hoops because just like NBA that could be their calling card as well especially with the ground work they laid prevoiusly ans as one noted adding an online franchise we MIGHT be talking sports game of THE YEAR!!!

@timotomtime I agree that NFL 2k needs to come back, but I was just considering NCAA College Hoops. NFL 2k has been kicked around since 2006 and I agree it was nice, but that is another example of how 2k has had the premier in a couple areas of gaming. NBA, NCAA College Hoops, and the NFL were all superior and could be the greatest of all time, but it doesn't seem we will ever find out with College Hoops or NFL.

I'd say Top Spin hands down. A game that is good but fly's under the radar and gets attention for all of 15 minutes (if that). I would easily drop Top Spin for a College Hoops game.

Top Spin. I just don't see there being as big a market for it as college basketball. Then again, there may be a market for it internationally but being a huge basketball fan, I would love for them to get rid of that or MLB and go for college hoops again.

MLB 2K. It is a series that has exclusivity on the 360 and 2K did very little to make the game fun. With all 2K has done well with NBA 2K the MLB series falls way short.

Wont even mention the PS3 version since the show is miles better.

I am one that hopes 2K gets back in the college hoops arena as well as have an opportunity to compete with a NFL game. I also hope EA gets to go back to making MVP Baseball.

Top Spin no question. I would like to think that there's more baseball gamers than tennis gamers. 2K just needs to do what they did with NBA 2K12 graphics wise & tune whatever gameplay issues MLB 2K has & they'll be good.
