Narrator: As the new season began for newly elected head coach, Duncan Frazier, he had to do so with the talk of the media lingering over him.

Frazier: Every article I read and heard about said that UCF went from a bad coach to a worse coach. I was very young and that I got lucky in FIU. I just let those talks resonate in the back of my mind and told the players that their play would dictate how our season would go.

Narrator: The team didn�t get to start the season against a cupcake team as their first opponent was against a BCS conference school in USF.

Frazier: I requested that game because they were a fellow Florida school and in order to turn UCF into a better program, I would have to recruit players from this state. So winning games against other schools in the state would show recruits we are better than them and that if they wanted to play for a winning program in their state, they should choose us.

Narrator: The game was nationally televised, but it ended up backfiring in two ways for the Golden Knights. The first reason was because they ended up losing the game 28-24 by giving up a late touchdown and throwing an interception with their last opportunity. The other reason the plan backfired was because earlier in the interception drive, star running back Harvey was injured. At the time of the injury, he appeared to have a chest injury. After the game he was diagnosed by a doctor, he was diagnosed with a broken collarbone, an injury that would require him to miss the entire season.

Frazier: That injury at the time really hurt us because our other backs were unproven and going into your first year as a head coach, winning is all that matters to the boosters. And if you don�t have your best players on the field each game, you might find yourself out of a job very quickly.

Narrator: Even though the team began the season with a loss, their next game was against FIU, which meant an easier opponent. The team won the game but also found their future at running back.

Frazier: Before the game, I made a quick change and decided to start Storm Johnson instead of the other back. The first carry of the game, Johnson broke a tackle and ran for 72 yards. He finished the game with 182 yards, and from that point, I knew that our running back problem was solved. And in the offense I tend to run, that meant our season would be pretty successful.

Narrator: Successful the season was, with the Knights winning their next 7 games and starting conference play off undefeated. Their next opponent was a Houston Cougar team who was also 8-1 through 9 games, and the winner of this game would find their way into the top 25. On the first play of the game, kickoff returner Quentin McDuffie fielded the kickoff and as he ran, he slipped and fell to the turf. He got up limping and eventually taken back into the locker room. The injury bug had bitten once again, and this diagnosis was a broken leg. The injury would take 6 weeks to heal, and with 4 weeks left in the regular season, that meant if he healed like he was supposed to, he would be healthy for the Knights Bowl game. UCF managed to escape Houston with a 23-21 victory on a last second field goal, but by no means were the Knights happy with their victory.

Frazier: The team knew, that now with 2 star players out, someone else would have to step up. McDuffie was used on special teams and as a receiver, so two spots would now have to be filled. But as the coach of the team, I knew that the team would rally and take care of business, even without our two senior leaders.

Narrator: The team did just that as they managed to finish their final 2 games and finish the regular season 11-1. Their championship game opponent was against SMU, a team that went 8-4 and was predicted by many to win the game.

Frazier: I remember how all the sports analysts and Kirk Herbestreit even picked SMU to upset us. Even though we were the 15th best team in the nation, we still got no respect and that really hurt me as a coach. So I told our guys to not hold anything back, and if the opportunity arose, to run the score up.

Narrator: The final score of the championship game was 52-3 in favor of the Golden Knights. They had won their first conference championship in 2 years, and hoped to win a bowl game as well to end their amazing season. The only thing standing between that was a ranked West Virginia team. The game played out as it as a heavyweight battle, with no team establishing a lead larger than 7 in the entire game. It was in the 4th quarter that West Virginia scored a touchdown to tie the game at 14 a piece. With 6:29 left in the quarter, West Virginia expected to get the ball back with an opportunity to match whatever UCF scored or even win the game. The problem was that UCF had Storm Johnson, and on the game-winning 17-play drive by UCF, they ran the ball 15 times. Storm Johnson simply carried his team to victory and won MVP honors for his performance. UCF managed to earn the 10th spot in the final season polls and looked forward to next season with many of the players returning to the program. But during the offseason, the Head Coach of Miami, Al Golden was fired. Miami had been a dominant program and after two head coaches who failed to return them to greatness, they once again were out to find a coach to possibly get them to the Promised Land. They called Duncan Frazier and gave him an opportunity of a lifetime, the chance to coach his alma mater. A football team in which many of the players were just a few years younger than him. The Hurricanes went 4-8 last season, and with a coach who had only one loss last season, the Hurricanes expect a lot more out of their team this next season.
