The result of this game is impressive and we really have to thank our offense for the way they played. Our defense continued to tighten up, and we played the pass a whole lot better. Two interceptions to go along with multiple sacks really proves how dominant these kids can be. I think the biggest thing was that only 3 receivers on the other team caught passes; that is what I call shut down defense.

We sent out a scholarship to a new kid this week, Jon Collins. He's a do it all defensive player. We plan on trying him out at MLB if he comes to play for us, but could literally player any position except for CB. That's the kind of versatile player ever coach loves to have.

First game of the season didn't go perfectly as planned, as our defensive backs showed their inexperience often. The 300+ passing yards given up is misleading, as there was two big pass plays that slipped just past the backs; if one or both of them didn't connect, Appalachian State would be looking at less than 200 passing yards. The running game was completely shut down, which is a positive and something we strive for. We'll work on coverages this week. Hopefully it'll lead to less big pass plays, and more INT's

Kyle McBride is the first commit of the 2011 season, and we're ecstatic to have him aboard. He's a big back, 202 lbs. with a 4.6 40-time. He'll need to improve that speed, but if not he could be a very good goal line/short yardage back, similar to LenDale White. He's a great pass catcher out of the back field too, and could see time at H-Back.

5-star WR Charles Brown committed to Oklahoma over the weekend. A 5-star recruit is always hard to lose, at least we didn't get emotionally invested. Jason Cooper, who has actually played against Brown, replaces him on the Big Board. He's the #3 WR in Arkansas, and #12 overall.

NEXT WEEK: @ East Carolina

Our non-conference schedule is one that I expect to go undefeated during, with the scheduling of two FCS teams. East Carolina and their Air Raid could be a challenge but I'm confident we'll be prepared for them by Week 2. Our conference schedule looks to be a true test, something this defense and I accept. The ACC is shaping up to be a quality conference, hopefully VT can remain the crown jewel. 2011 is upon us!

The defense I run is the 44 Ghost defense, designed in the 80s to help and stop the run. Over the years, with more and more teams switching to the spread and spread option, the defense has had to change and adapt. The 44 is now run out of a 42 front, with two special positions: the Rover and the Whip. In a traditional defense, they would be the outside linebackers, but in our defense their players similar to safeties. We allow them to roam the field; their the eyes of our defense and choose whether to cover or blitz based on their reads. Typically, you'll see our Rover in coverage and our Whip closer to the line of scrimmage.

This recruiting class heading into the season could shape up to be one of the best in VT history if everything goes right. Each player has the exact quality Coach Beamer and I look for in a player. I'll give more in-depth analysis on each recruit over the course of the season. Keep an eye on T Kyle Wilson. He's the recruit we want most.

Some would call me loyal. Some would call me scared. Some would call me stupid. The one thing I know is that I know defense, and no matter what I'm called, I will always know defense.

I've been at Virginia Tech for 17 years now. The blue collar defenses I've built have been recognized and I've had lots of offers to move on. It hasn't been right. It might never be right. I'm going to continue to coach defenses to the best of my ability. When the right opportunity presents itself, I'll strike as aggressively as my defenses do. I can promise that.

Best Regards,

Coach Foster
