The BCS Travesty
Posted on November 12, 2008 at 11:53 PM.
I know the BCS has been covered/uncovered, blended, and bludgeoned to death but I am going to add another twist.

I am an SDSU alum. We play (actually, get bludgeoned ourselves) in the Mountain West Conference. Home of BYU, Utah, TCU, etc.

We are not in a BCS conference.

Right now, we are arguably the 4th best conference in NCAA Football behind the Big 12, SEC and PAC 10. We have posted victories over the PAC 10, Big 10, and the SEC.

Right now, we practically have to beg to play in a BCS game while lesser football conferences such as the ACC and Big East get automatic invites.

It is a travesty beyond measure.

While schools like UCONN, Rutgers, Duke, and Syracuse can put together mediocre teams and still reap the BCS rewards, a school like SDSU must struggle to exist. We are desperately close to losing football because we cannot compete financially.

With the BCS close to continuing its cartel in major college football, once again, conferences like the Mountain West will still be on the outside looking in.

It is time for a change.

It is time for the Mountain West, WAC, MEAC, Conference USA, Big West, etc. to start their own playoff system.

I am confident a network will offer a contract. The winner of the playoff can call itself the NCAA Champion. It will lessen the gloss of the BCS to a major extent, while helping the non BCS schools financially. There will be calls for the BCS champion to the play the winner of the NCAA playoff in a one game take all.

I know there will be many objections and reasons why it isn't feasible. But to me, an alum and fan of a non-BCS school...I say screw em.

The one issue I see with this is that it implicitly reinforces the notion that the non-BCS FBS teams are of a lesser quality than their BCS conference counterparts. Though I'm sure that the non-BCS playoff would get covered by some network, I'm not sure that it's the right step to take to get these schools a fair shake in the existing structure of the system.

I do agree, however, that a more level playing field needs to be established for the smaller schools, somehow.

I agree to a point except when Utah throttles Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl. Boise State beats Oklahoma in the...err...forgot the bowl. Wyoming beats Tennessee in Tennessee. Plus, all of the MWC victories over the PAC 10 this season. The non BCS teams can make the argument that they do compete and can win against BCS schools.
