The rise of the Aztecs?

For the 1st time in many years, I am excited again about San Diego State Football. If you haven't heard, SDSU hired Ball State's Brady Hoke as their new head coach to replace the nice, but drab and inept Chuck Long.

Now Hoke does have risks...some say he may be a one season wonder, but his assistant coaching hires have Aztec land bristling with excitement.

First we have our new offensive coordinator, Al Borges. Now I know he had some down seasons at Auburn, but over a long period of time, he has had a lot of success. He was UCLA's OC during their explosive 90's teams. UCLA almost scored at will with Cade Mcknown, JJ Stokes and a host of others.

Second, we now have former New Mexico coach Rocky Long as our DC. Long brought the Lobo's incredible success in his 11 years at the helm. They ranked in the top 30 in defense for many years. They bowled 7 times and he also was the DC coordinator during UCLA's string 90's run.

Hoke has started to assemble, a tough, no-nonsense staff to go along with his tough, no-nonsense self. His first course of action was to have a 7:00 AM meeting for the players the day after he was hired. One player showed up at the door a couple of minutes late, said he had car trouble, and expected to be let in. Hoke told him to take a hike, he didn't tolerate lateness. The teams reaction....gasps......The alums reaction....smiles

Aztec nation is is jumping for joy. Visions of Marshall Faulk galloping for over 300 yards (and getting jipped out of the Heisman....arrgghhh...Torretta and Corso

) are again filling our brains. It may take time, but in 2-3 years, you WILL see the Aztecs bowling, and gasp, competing for the MWC title.

We are a sleeping giant. We have the BEST weather, terrific facilities, and an NFL stadium to play in. Watch out NCAA, Aztec pride is back with a vengeance.
