PHILADELPHIA, PA – Hockey’s back!
The New Jersey Devils (1-0-0) kicked off their season on the road against the Philadelphia Flyers (1-1-0) on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center. The high-scoring game opened with a goal early at 3:30 of the first period, when Marty Havlat nudged one in past Philadelphia’s Steve Mason after a shot from Patric Elias. Less than two minutes later the Devils rushed the Flyers’ zone again. Travis Zajac took a point blank shot at Steve Mason that was blocked and bounced away behind the net, where Jaromir Jagr was able to gain control of it and pass it back to Zajac, who scored on a one-timer from the low slot. Though down, the Flyers were not out of the contest, with a couple of big hits from Lecavalier and Grossmann on Marty Havlat and Travis Zajac to keep the energy on the Flyers’ bench high.
It looked as though the Flyers had closed the gap by one at 14:10 when R.J. Umberger batted a high puck out of the air and over the shoulder of Cory Schneider, but after review by the official the goal was disallowed.
With time ticking down in the final seconds of the first the Devils were back on the attack, with Mark Letestu carrying the puck in over the blueline on a questionable play that was not whistled down. After some quick passing at the point the play was broken up by Claude Giroux, who failed to clear the puck out of the zone. Havlat regained possession with a nifty pokecheck and passed it over to Jon Merrill, who held onto it and then gave it back to Havlat in front of the net who went to his backhand and put it high over the shoulder of Steve Mason for his second goal of the night, extending the New Jersey lead to three goals.
Early in the second the Flyers struck back making it a 3 – 1 game with a goal on a one-timer from Claude Giroux. The play started on a big hit from Vincient Lecavalier in the Flyers’ end that dislodged the puck from Mike Cammalleri’s stick and started a rush the other way. Flyers forward Matt Read carried it in over the blue line and made a pass to Lecavalier at the point, who was able to find Giroux open at the top of the slot. Less than a minute later the Flyers struck again, with a goal from Zack Stortini off his own rebound on Cory Schneider, bringing the Flyers to within one goal. Though the Flyers seemed resurgent in the wake of two quick goals, the Devils were determined to hold on to their lead. Adam Henrique scored a quick goal at 6:10 of the second period to extend the Devils’ lead by two once more. With a shot from the slot by Ryan Clowe landing in the corner, Henrique was able to dig out the puck and push into the middle of the slot, where he put it in over the glove of Steve Mason.
The Flyers struck again with a goal from Waynne Simmonds at 10:38, who took off on a breakaway only to be pokechecked by the Devils’ netminder Schneider, but before he was able to cover the puck up and kill the play a backchecking Marek Zidlicky kicked it into the back of the Devils’ net, bringing the score to 4 – 3. Two minutes later, Lecavalier brought the game to a 4 – 4 tie with a pass from Luke Schenn and Matt Read, before burying the puck in the back of the net from out front of the Devil’s goaltender. Jaromir Jagr came close to breaking the 4 – 4 deadlock when he intercepted a weak pass out of the Flyers end at 14:28. Walking in on the left wing Jagr rifled a shot at Mason who was able to get in front of it and prevent the Devils from taking the lead once more.
A miscommunication between Devils defencemen Marek Zidlicky and Jon Merrill in the first half of the third period leaves Waynne Simmonds open to pickup the loose puck in front of the Devils’ net, scoring his second goal of the game and giving the Philadelphia Flyers the go-ahead goal in the game.
Mike Cammalleri would net his first of the game a few minutes later, after Jaromir Jagr broke out of the Devils’ end on a give-and-go from Eric Gelinas. Skating down the length of the ice Jagr managed to get around the defenceman Braydon Coburn and slip a pass cross-crease to Mike Cammalleri who one-timed it in to the back of the net to notch the score at 5 – 5. Three minutes later in a remarkably similar experience Ryan Clowe streaked down the left wing to find Tuomo Ruutu open in front of the net and score the go-ahead goal making the score 6 – 5 for the Devils.
The Devils would go on to score twice more for a final of 8 – 5, with goals coming from Letestu and Clowe. Adam Henrique, Mark Letestu and Ryan Clowe each had a 3-point game for the Devils, while Marty Havlat scored two goals for the Devils and Waynne Simmonds scored two for the Flyers.
The New Jersey Devils are set to take on the Florida Panthers on October 11th in Florida.
