Giants Sack Broncos 31-25

by Mike Klis

East Rutherford, N.J. -- Rookie DE Johnny Busey enjoyed a bunch of success in high school and at the University of Oklahoma, but he had never had a day like this. On Sunday, Busey sacked Broncos QB Jay Cutler five times. "He is in line for a raise after what he did," said Broncos Head Coach Jason Griffin. "Never have I had a game like this, but for it to come in the NFL is truly special," said Busey. He wasn't the only Giant to get to Cutler. In all, Cutler was sacked 12 times to push the total to 22 of the number of sacks he has taken. that puts Cutler on pace to be sacked 88 times which would easily eclipse the record of 76 times set by David Carr of the Houston Texans. Griffin, who was visibly upset, said, "If our offensive line doesn't improve drastically, we are going nowhere this season. We have to get better." The running game was non-existent also. Ozzie Jones ran for nine yards on 15 carries. For his part, Cutler had a big day throwing the footballas he passed for a season high 341 yards on 20-29 and finished with a 117.1 QB rating. Rookie Tra Campbell continued his impressive play with 6 catches for 142 yards and a td. The defense wasn't stellar either. They did hold Marion Barber to 59 yards on 22 carries, but they surrendered 360 yards passing and three touchdowns to Eli Manning. WR Steve Smith had 7 catches for 92 yards and two td's. "We felt that we could pass on them despite the big names that they have at cornerback, because they still have two rookies starting at safety," said Manning. Both teams will be on the road next week as the Giants travel to Minnesota and the Broncos travel to Pittsburgh.
