In case you were dead the last few days, Henrik Sedin is now a Panther.
The Panthers didn't stop there however. They signed a total of 6 players in the first week of the free agent frenzy. Let's take a look at who's headed to South Florida.
C HENRIK SEDIN
We covered him in our last post, but he's worth talking about again. He joins a pretty stacked forward group on the Panthers. No clue who he player with. We just speculated Hubey and Pavelski. Maybe Neal or Ennis or Mueller. Either way he will put up some points.
D RYAN ELLIS
Ellis was a RFA, meaning Nashville got a chance to match any offer he recieved. Being their cap is as tight as balls, it was a mere certainty he would go to the highest bidder. The Panthers basically chose him over Jeff Petry. They had to give up a 2nd rounder, but this kid is a stud. He hasn't made a huge impact in the NHL yet but he will get a chance to do that in Florida
D SIMON DESPRES
Another RFA defenseman. Pittsburgh was in the same situation as Nashville. The Panthers used their 3rd rounder to pry him away. He's a pretty solid two way guy. We're not sure who we are more excited for. All reports indicate this guy is ready to break out.
G RICK DIPIETRO
Ah, good old Ricky D. He's had an up and down career on the Island. Well, mainly downs but the guy had at least one good season right? He's a backup so no need to get all jammed up about this signing. Markstrom is expected to carry the load in net so Mr. DiPietro may get 15-20 starts at most. That's if he doesn't hurt himself opening the door to the bench.
D Raphael Diaz
Solid signing here. Diaz is an underrated right handed defenseman. More than capable in the offensive zone. With the two youngsters signed, and four guys already locks, he looks to be our 7th Dman. We'll take that any day of the week.
RW JUSTIN FONTAINE
Fontaine is a career minor leaguer. Once a prized prospect of the Wild, he never got a chance at the NHL. Appearently he put up some monster numbers in the AHL last year. Yeah so did about 1000 other people. Not sure what to expect. He has some scoring touch but will he get a chance?

Now onto other NHL news

- Cory Schnieder signed with the Chicago Blackhawks
- Jason Pominville signed with the Lightning.
- Eric Staal and Gabriel Landeskog headed to Calgary, Krecji back to Boston, and Brad Richards to Detroit. Buffalo and New York also swapped Thomas Vanek and Ryan Callahan.
