Joe Pavelski and the Panthers came to terms. Four years, 22 million. Thats good for a cap hit of 5.5 a year. Not bad for a player of Pavelski's caliber. He was a force all season long last year, especially in the playoffs.
Now with his deal out of the way, GM Brian Bilotti can focus on free agency. There's some big names out there. Let's take a look. Here's the top 5 players available.
C HENRIK SEDIN
Pittsburgh traded Crosby away basically for the Sedin twins last year. While Crosby was busy lifting the Cup the Sedins were busy playing golf or whatever they do in Sweden. Pittsburgh announced they signed his brother Daniel, but Henrik is free to explore other options. He's 33 and still one of the best players in the league. Hard to see the Panthers paying close to $10 mil a year on him though.
G HENRIK LUNDQVIST
Another guy named Henrik, another elite player. The Rangers cap situation is a bigger mess than Hurricane Sandy. He's in the prime of his career and perhaps the best. Florida isn't going to sign him, so let's hope he goes to the Western Conference so we only have to see him once a year.
RW JASON POMINVILLE
Buffalo let's Pominville go, appearantly due to him wanting some epic contract. We're talking $7 plus a year. No thanks. He's a good top line player on most teams. Don't see Florida going after him, but if he brings his demands down a bit, who knows.
D JEFF PETRY
Another big name the Rangers let go. They seem like they're trying to bring him back. He will be the most demanded Dman in free agency, so good like with that. This a guy we'd love to see the Panthers get. He's a righty who can put up some points from the blueline. Would be a great partner for Dimitry Kulkov.
D ANDREI MARKOV
Markov's old no question. With Vis and Stuart gone, the Panthers have a void on defense. He's a guy with s skill set just like Visnovsky so he could be a natural fit. He's Russian so look for him to demand about a billion dollars a year.
