The 2013-2014 season is officially over. The Canucks are champs. We'll see plenty of photos all summer about what/where the Cup went with all those ahole Vancouver players. Yeah life sucks right now.
But it's time to turn the page and get over ourselves. The Panthers had an incredible run, something us Panthers fans have never really witnessed. Easily the best season in franchise history.
Free Agency looms. In this preview we are gonna go over our players that we may sign or not sign.
C Joe Pavelski - Obviously priority number 1. He was the teams best player offensively and played well with Jonathan Huberdeau. GM Brian Bilotti has had talks with Pavelski's agent during the season. He is expected to resign somewhere in the $4-5 million range. We don't see any reason why he would even test the free agent waters.
D Brad Stuart - Stuart came over in the Pavelski trade, almost as a thrown in. He turned into a top pairing defenseman and played alongside Kulikov all season. He is getting up in age at 34 years old. No talks with the Panthers yet about a new deal. But if he accepts a reasonable salary in the $3 mil range he could keep the Panthers sweater on for another few seasons.
D Filip Kuba - Kuba became a scratch as soon as Lubomir Visnovsky was aquired at the trade deadline. Injuries really slowed him down during his 2 year stretch with the Panthers. He may chose to retire or play over in his native Czech Republic. Either way, Panthers management has no intention of bringing the aging veteran back.
C/RW Jamie Langenbrunner - Langenbrunner joined the Panthers midway through last season and proved to be a good verteran presence. After trading away Marcel Goc he filled the 4th line center position nicely. That said he will turn 40 years old next season. Just like Kuba, he is also considering retirement. If he is willing to comeback, perhaps at a minimum salary, I could see Bilotti giving him at least an invite to training camp.
LW Eric Selleck - Speaking of 4th liners, Selleck came out of no where last year and got solid playing time. Most Panthers fans never heard of this guy until Barry Melrose announced he made the team at the start of last year. He won't command a very high salary and could very well be brought back.
D Erik Gudbranson - Guds had an up and down season, literally. He got off to a slow start, played great in the middle of the year, and got sent down for the last few weeks of the regular season. Not to be denied he started every postseason game and had a great playoffs. The coaching staff seems to trust him in key situations, for whatever reason. He still hasn't lived up to his #3 overall selection back in 2010. Still he will certainly be retained, perhaps even less that his current $3 million salary off his rookie deal.
LW Tyler Ennis - Buffalo surprised everyone by letting Ennis go last offseason. He may have struggled in Buffalo, but thrived here in Florida. The weird thing is, his $3 million, 1 year contract still doesn't give him enough service time to be a UFA. So once again he will be a restricted free agent. The Panthers won't make the mistake the Sabres did and he will be resigned. Expect a cap number around the same with a 4-5 year term.
C Roman Horak - Calgary dealt the youngster Horak for Marcel Goc midseason. Horak had a great few weeks towards the end of the season with a 6 game point streak. He projects as a 2nd line forward. But with Florida having a logjam at both center and left wing, he will likely see time on the 3rd line. Plus he shouldn't demand too much, we expect somewhere between $1-1.5 for 2-3 years.
