Madden NFL 17 News Post

EA Sports has sent out another Madden NFL 17 Draft Champions update, check out the details below.
  • Added a QB round. The first round of every draft will now consist of 3 QB options. After the QB round there will be no other QB’s shown in the draft. This is to give users more variety in the positions they get to choose from while drafting.
  • Updated Legend Round. The pool of players in the Legend round has now been updated to account for some of the more up to date Legend items in MUT. The older Legends that were taken out the Legend round can now be found in the normal draft pool. Legend round is now 2nd round of draft instead of first.
  • Updated Draft Pool. The players in the draft pool have now been completely updated. We will look to continue to update the draft pool throughout the remainder of the year.
  • Updated Base Team. Base teams have been updated to now consist of all Gold player items.

Booo I like the mystery of not having a qb, now I and everyone else is set at qb.

When was Alex Smith a 93 overall quarterback? I know this isn't the point of the story but that seems weird to me. I know Finneran was a WAR that was only Madden dominant so he got a huge boost but I don't think Smith has ever been elite in Madden or IRL.

did they ever have a madden draft champions bowl? that would be cool to see guys set up a different team every match which would highlight the skill of the player using different players and how they can adapt their play style to using different players as well.

Bad idea. Choosing when to pull the trigger on a QB is part of what made DC exciting.

i'm not an ultimate team guy but i will be trying the draft champions mode in the off season now that my franchise mode has ended for this year....it's a lot like fantasy football meets madden and that is very appealing to me. basically like drafting your fantasy football team and playing that team in madden, which should be a match made in heaven when you think about it.

Me too, and for me sometimes I liked to pass on a good QB and take my chances in hoping for another QB will come around. The only thing I wished they would have added is a Kicker/Punter Round.

I am not a fan of the "QB Round" whatsoever, and I sincerely hope that that change is only temporary for (presumably) the Draft Champions leg of the Madden tournament scene.

The most unique component and arguably the biggest draw of the experience in Draft Champions is the eponymous draft itself. The draft is only 15 rounds, so each pick the user makes has risk. For example, in the original setup, if a user passed on a mid-80s quarterback for a low-90s offensive lineman (or whatever other position), there was no guarantee he'd see a QB again in the draft. The user thus had to factor that very real risk into his drafting decision. At the same time, however, going with the low 80s QB also had the risk of seeing a higher-rated QB in the draft pool later, which presented a different choice: draft over the low 80s QB and lose out on a player at a different position (especially harmful because the situation where two different QBs play in Madden is rare), or stick with the decent player you already have? That ever-present risk makes the draft in Draft Champions interesting, and it's still fortunately present at the other positions on the field.

The addition of the QB Round reduces the risk a user faces, however. With a high-rated QB always guaranteed in Round 1, that draft pick tension I described above for unquestionably the most important position on the field no longer exists. It hurts the on-field experience as well, as every online opponent will always have a skilled quarterback, thus the variety of team configurations is reduced.

So yeah - in my opinion, Draft Champions is tangibly less interesting on account of this change.

Definitely agree with this. Also, it changes the types of teams fielded through draft champions. Gone are the teams where you didn't get a great QB or decent WRs but built a great running team or elite defence instead.

Depending on who you listen too, if average QBs play almost the same as elite QBs on the field, was it necessary to guarantee a decent QB in a round that actually takes away the choice of another skilled player in another position? Some might have avoided a QB (unless they were a scrambler) in favour of the stock QB plus another great player elsewhere...
