NHL 17 News Post

There's a lot to love about the strategic aspect of NHL 17. In many ways, the game forces you to be a bit more cerebral in how you attack an opponent, which is never a bad thing.

The folks over at Cheltips have put together a pretty expansive guide on the coaching end of things in NHL 17.

Quote:
"I started with research, but appears there is some room for a bit of interpretation on most hockey strategies so I decided that watching the in-game AI would be best way to determine exactly what positions these strategies will be putting them in.

In this guide, we will cover Offensive Zone Bias, Forecheck, Offensive Line Strategies, Neutral Zone, Defensive Line Strategies, and finally Defensive Pressure. Breakouts and special teams will have to wait for another day Check out Coaching Strategies Part Two for breakout and special teams strategies."

Be sure to check out the guide as it covers a lot of topics which you will certainly find helpful!

Fantastic guide. Even schooled me on some things I didn't know.

Thanks, I started a thread recently asking this exact thing. Very informative.

Thanks @MMChrisS and @Millennium(again) for sharing this

Wanted to stop in and just say that if anyone happens to have any questions on the guide(s) then let me know and I'll answer them best I can.

I think it made me realize that as well while I was testing out the strategies before writing it - glad it helped you out!

I tend to control a winger when on defense and leave it to the defenders to do their thing. Sometimes an opposing player will skate right between my two defensemen and get in clean on my goalie. Is there a setting or strategy which will prevent this or do I need to control a defender?

Hey tessl, is this when your opponent is on the rush? They're just blowing by your defensemen or is it when they are setup in your own zone and they dangle around and then just skate right through?

Either way making your defenseman more aggressive should help so change the Defensive Pressure to Puck Side Attack or High Pressure. I'd try High Pressure if you're leaving it all up to the AI.

If they are blowing past you on the rush then try 1-3-1 neutral zone setup and make the Offensive Bias more relaxed like "Sit Back" - this should make them get into defensive positions earlier on so hopefully your opponent won't be able to get an angle on them to skate by when transitioning to offense.

Keep in mind, they are still just AI so against players who are really good at predicting the AI's behavior you will probably be better off becoming one of your defenders.

I have to say this works really way!!! Especially vs a user who does not want to puck and chase. I played 3 guys last night. And only one of them adjusted really well too it.

One guy actually just stood behind his goal. Just sitting there waiting.... like this... hahaha. I was down one. So I had to turn it up.

Full endorsement of the guide from me!

Learned a little just about hockey systems from reading, which has made watching real games the past few weeks that much better.

In terms of the game itself, reading through made me re-visit how I played defense. Still give up a few goals here and there that I wish I hadn't, but my grades for defense have gone up from C's and C+'s to B+'s.
