Madden NFL 17 News Post

Sgibs posted a great tip video comprehensively talking about how to stop the run in Madden NFL 17.

There's a lot of great information in this one to help you improve your run defense, including recommended settings and how to align your defense. Gibs really spends a good bit of time breaking down why Madden NFL 17 is different than previous versions and why paying attention to your gap assignments is incredibly important.

What do you think about stopping the run this year in Madden? What kind of things are you doing to stop it?

It's more of stopping the pass that I have trouble with..

Something that's helping me as the Cowboys in my franchise is aggressively using formation subs. For example, in my 4-3 base defensive fronts, I pull Randy Gregory out of the game, kick Tyrone Crawford out to left defensive end, swap Demarcus Lawrence out to right defensive end, and set Cedric Thornton and Terrell McClain as my defensive tackles.

This gives me better run defenders in the interior of my defense (Crawford is a good pass rush DT, but he has 70 BSH, whereas McClain and Thornton are both in the 80s wrt BSH), a more physical presence on the edge of the defensive front (Crawford is a stronger player than Gregory), and also saves Gregory for what he does best in rushing the passer (at 74 STA, Gregory is not an every-down player on this game).

In general, I've found that being aware of what your personnel can and can't do and putting each of your players in position to contribute to the best of their specific abilities can greatly increase your likelihood of success this year. If you do have a do-it-all player like Von Miller or Aaron Donald, you are at a tremendous advantage. Most teams don't have that, though, so maximizing the players you do have is key.

Use the Seahawks, play cover 6 show 4 or drop 4 QB contain, user one of their speed backs, problem solved.

That is way too much movement, and not football. No one is going to expose the middle that much, especially in a "solid front" where your tackles are shaded over the outside shoulder of the guards. To stop the stretch run, go 3-4 even. It puts a cap over each man while not over exposing the middle. This video demonstrate the difference between having football knowledge and vidoe game knowledge. I have not had a problem stopping the stretch run using the Even front. Some of these vidoes are helpful and then there are those that leaving me laughing. This one made me laugh.

Stopping the run is childs play since the last tuner. Call a play and go get a sandwich. We need an article on how to make the AI run effectively without cranking up the AI sliders on All-Madden.

Cover 4 is a run defense. It puts both safeties in the run fit. It's notably useful in defending the outside run such as stretch plays. You are correct to call Cover 4 to defend the run.

People really don't realize this, they see cover 4 and automatically assume it's a prevent defense

I run the Vikings 4-3 base, and I use 2 3-4 style DT's and heavier, almost 3-4 DE's...In exchange, my 3 LB's are all about speed, PRC, AWR and zone cover..I'll pinch my DT's and spread out my DE's and LB's...

The 2 heavy DT's can stop the inside runs with their higher Blockshed and strength you get from 3-4 DT's and that leaves all my other players available to cover the stretch plays...I user my lone MLB....I generally run COver 3 Match as my base alignment...

I just don't see the problem stopping the run in this year's game. I play in an All-Madden CFM with a handful of friends where we all pick one team to be for the league, but for every game on each user's schedule another user 'retires' and takes control of the opponent for that week, so we are always playing head-to-head, never the CPU.

In our league, running is a chore. You may make a big run every once in a while, but it's typically 10-15 carries for 35-60 yards for RBs. I've yet to break 100 yards with a single rusher as the Cowboys. We may be advanced players, but running on All-Madden is no joke.

The front 4 is the steel curtain against the run and a bunch of statues against the pass regardless of team.

Your correct, C4 is a very good outside run counter. Many people don't recognize this.

The problem I have, since the tuner that is, is that Safeties and Corners have become just as effective tackling runners one-on-one as my line backers are. You should have some kind of trade off with having less weight in your run fits that allow me to take advantage downhill. It shouldn't be automatic, but I should have an advantage against most Safeties.

That was biggest gripe with the tuner - DB tackling effectiveness.

The Steelers and the Ravens did this plenty in the 2000s and 2010s with Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed quarterbacking their respective defenses.

Playing as the Cowboys in my franchise, I defeated both player ratings and released Rolando McClain and Randy Gregory. Needless to say, I am just a tad short-handed. Anyway, I've found that pinching my line in helps keep my quick linebackers free to get to the ball carrier. I only do this against certain formations. Also, I like to slant/crash my line in so I can penetrate (1-gap) against nickel looks. Cover 3 seems to help as well, as it brings SS Church down in the box. I have better luck with that than Cover 4, but that's my just my experience. I didn't think the tuner would affect offline play, but since installing, stopping the run on All Pro hasn't been much of an issue.

My main run defense is the 3-4 Bear, I have yet to give up a 100 yard rusher in my online CFM (All Pro) and we're in week 12. Nickel 335 and Double A-Gap are good run D's as well. I do a lot of run blitzing and blitzing in general. I run a 3-4 D, and I have a t least 5 or 6 rushers about 65% of the time. I also blitz my CB's a lot, which stops outside runs in their tracks, if the run is towards the blitzer. I have Leonard Williams, Anthony Barr, Daniell Hunter, Stephen Paea, Phill Taylor, Deion Jones, and Jatavis Brown on my front 7, fantasy CFM by the way. I user Jatavis, who I have 11 user picks with, as of week 12. Still trying to get better at usering the run, probably the 1 weak spot of my run D is my usering it, great at usering the pass though.

Once I started pinching the D-Line and spreading my LBs, my mlb(Mike backer) started going tackle crazy. And it's Will Compton!
17 total tackles in game vs Steelers
12 total in game 2 vs Cowboys.
I posted about this a few days ago in my Slider thread lol.
Good info for guys that still play online and offline the old way.
