Critically acclaimed franchise to give fans early start to this year’s MyCAREER experience, ability to play collegiate games and more!

2K today announced “The Prelude,” a free downloadable experience for NBA 2K17, the top-rated and top-selling NBA video game simulation series*, which will be available on September 9, 2016. For the first time in NBA 2K history, gamers – both new and old – will get to start their MyCAREER experience prior to the game’s launch on September 20, 2016 on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 computer entertainment systems. Gamers who download “The Prelude” will choose from multiple authentic Division I collegiate programs and have the ability to boost their stock for the NBA Draft. Additionally, “The Prelude” experience will include enhanced MyPlayer personalization through new mobile phone face scan technology via the MyNBA2K Companion App, and an all–new tutorial mode in 2KU, featuring 2016 USA Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski (“Coach K”).

“The Prelude was designed specifically to introduce new fans to our franchise, and give them an introduction to our legendary MyCAREER mode that puts the user at the center of an epic basketball story,” said Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts. “Veterans of NBA 2K will also love getting a head start on their MyCAREER, so when the game launches they can be ready to jump in and compete.”

During “The Prelude”, players will watch their draft stock fluctuate dynamically based on their performance across the participation of multiple authentic college games. In true cinematic form, they’ll also catch a glimpse of exclusive MyCAREER scenes through their customized avatar, which include interactions with high school coaches, teammates, and more. Players’ in-game performance during college play will ultimately influence where they are drafted upon entering the league in NBA 2K17.

“The incredible excitement during the first week of NBA 2K16’s launch showed us there was an opportunity to connect with even more fans prior to the formal release of NBA 2K17,” said Alfie Brody, VP of Marketing for NBA 2K. “We think we’ve given our passionate community something special with this year, and can’t wait to see the response from not only existing fans, but new ones as well.”

Included in “The Prelude” is 2KU, a tutorial featuring Coach K, focused on fundamental basketball strategies including pick and roll execution, proper defensive positioning, ball movement, boxing out, court awareness and more. Gamers can also use the MyNBA2K17 iOS and Android companion app to scan their facial likeness into their MyCAREER avatar within minutes. This new mobile phone camera fan scan technology serves as the perfect introduction to the custom experience, as players begin playing MyCAREER. Additionally, after September 16, 2016 gamers will be able to purchase and download playable “all-time great” teams for each of the playable colleges as well as special collegiate MyTeam cards representing legendary players.

The NBA 2K17 Standard Edition will be available in both digital and physical formats for $59.99 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, and Windows PC platforms on September 20. The NBA 2K17 Kobe Bryant Legend Edition will be available in digital and physical formats for $79.99 on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 system. Also available for pre-order is the NBA 2K17 Kobe Bryant Legend Edition Gold offering fans the ultimate value at $99.99 with all of the regular NBA 2K17 Legend Edition contents plus bonus items. All fans who pre-order any version of NBA 2K17 will receive their copy at Early Tip-Off four days early, September 16.

Are you at least going to try it free on 9/9? Heck you get to play the game almost two week early!

I mean, this is cool and all but I'm more hyped about the fact that we're getting a demo and that freaking crowd . They've slowly killed MyCareer for me through the years to the point I just create my guy and put him on a team in MyLeague (like I used to do in the old days). I'm definitely giving this a shot though for 2 reasons:

1. I want to play it as early as possible, duh
2. I'm a sucker for a college game man. We REALLY need a college hoops game again. This is the perfect time to bring it back with having MyCareer now. It literally would sell the game for them. Having a full story mode while in college and exportable draft classes....drool.

I'm not a mycareer player but I'm going to try it since its free. It will be cool to learn the controls before the game comes out and get a hang of it. I'm optimistic that 2k focused on the gameplay this year since we haven't received much information on that front, that'll be the key on whether I purchase or not.

This was a complete surprise. I didn't think 2k would do something like this. This is a great start for 2k17.

They need to go ahead and bring College Hoops back!

This is all a strategy to gain new consumers who never played 2k basketball games now they get to try a demo of it for free.

Last night I said I was expecting the unexpected announcement to be a demo and I got something even better.

Lol. I think that's what marketing is about in general. Win win though.

They're taking the risk that a wild Jesus Coach K appear and ruin their franchise forever though.

If 2k was smart they would separate college from NBA 2k and sell it as a standalone so they can sell more, investing in more collegiate team's. I would so buy it if it released during the summer, like everyone says there's only a limited amount of space to put on one disc. Heck even a legends standalone game would sell well during the dead summer months, imagine a whole dev team dedicated to legends unlike now, it wont compete with NBA 2k since it will be released during the summer.

I don't even play MyCareer.

What I will do though, if this actually helps them bring us back a College Hoops game, I'll buy up that DLC to support for sure.

I'd pay for more legend teams if 2K would do it. That's worthwhile DLC to me IMO

The return of the Draft combine! this was by far one of the best features for 2k10 because it was released a month before the game came out that year and you got to build your Myplayer up and play him in the summer leagues to see where he could get drafted at in mycareer. How awesome would that be if they allowed you to do that again? Do you remember how the OTHER game allowed us to play their version of Pro Am and get his overral to an 80?
Well i believe if 2k worked their magic and somehow could get us to be able to work on our myplayers in summer leagues and AAU tournaments, that some how someway based on how well you perform, you can determine how well you do in the draft.

What would be even better is if we could play against each other in the Park & jordan rec center/pro am/crew mode with the players that we've made. none of the wins would count once the game officially came out, but we could all get a feel of how the game is played and what we need to improve on once that game is out.

Speaking of which....

Why can't we go back to focusing on playstyles to differentiate between players? It seems everyone is the same out here. My thing is this, Every players goal is to get as well rounded as possible in every area of basketball as possible. 2k should not cap myplayers ceilings on how the final product of the myplayer turns out to be.

for example...
Kawhi Leonard starts of as a lockdown defender. After a few years working on his game he turns into a an efficient 3 point shooter and well rounded basketball player.

i'm not saying this is the norm, nor am i saying every nba player has the drive to better themselves, but it should be reflected in the game that just because you make a play style that you have to stick it and cant be good at more than one thing.

Like take Russell Westbrook for instance, there have been quite a few guards that were pretty good at rebounding before him, and I'm sure there will be more that come after him that will excel in that category as well. But the fact of the matter is that Russy has the athleticism and drive to want to go after rebounds, so that if you create a myplayer and focus your attribute points on rebounds, you should be able to snag a few boards a game amongst the trees to make your player stand out from the pack.

Classic college teams in 2k? That's crazy. Never expected this. I wonder if it's the same colleges as last year or if they added more.

One thing that I really liked about the trailer was the my player voice. He sounded like an average guy. Last year the voice sounded like someone from the hood or something.
Holy crap!
I didnt even know about this after I watched the trailer. I guess I need to start reading everyting huh?
This is awesome. I actually like making alltime school teams over alltime NBA teams. It'll be weird without having a chance to play as some of the collegiate greats from programs like Kentucky, UNC and Duke.

Finally Badges limited to positions, and attributes sepreated and limits by archtype

I remember last year people asking for playstyles well 2k granted that wish it shows they actually read the wishlist thread.

# 158 Crunky @ 08/26/16 11:47 AM
I'm curious to see what gameplay additions they added because 2k usually reveals the best for last.

Wingspan has advantages and disadvantages this year, wow.

This is great, I hope I can make my Lamar Odom prototype. Have to see what the speed rating is when being a 6'10 Small Forward
