NBA 2K17 News Post

Today, we're going back 10 years to look at the world of sports gaming as it existed in 2006. This was a year that proved revolutionary for certain series, while others struggled under the weight of a new console generation. The Xbox 360 was entering its first full year, but Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii would have to wait until their respective launches in November of 2006 (US) to make a statement.

Looking back, there are more similarities with today's gaming scene than you might expect. EA Sports’ titles still reigned supreme for the most part, and series such as NBA 2K and MLB: The Show enjoyed immense popularity, as they do today. However, there were also plenty of highlights that disappeared from the gaming market in later years. Let’s go back and take a look at some of 2006's most important sports game releases.

I literally was thinking about this yesterday how we were at a magical place 10 years ago (push that to 12 years and look at how many sports games we had). Would be great if we still had all these options now but the games that are coming out are outstanding quality. Let's just hope we don't lose anymore series

That was a good time for sure. Especially 12 years ago. I may be naive but I firmly believe that we will see college football and basketball games again once the likeness issue is settled. I could see someone jumping into baseball again as well. The Show isn't going anywhere but the market is there on XB1.

Arguably the darkest few years of Madden

A nice stroll down memory lane -- oh Winning Eleven how I loved thee. And a few OS old-timers snuck in there too.

2k7 was nearly perfect back then. That was the first 2k game I got for 360 and was not disappointed. Graphics, at the time, were very impressive as was gameplay. First basketball game I remember having signature shots and styles. Playing as different teams and players was so exciting because you could see and feel a difference.

I remember the demo dropping, back when demos were released regularly, and I was hooked. I believe the demo was just 1 quarter, only a few minutes long, and featured the Heat and Mavericks. I played nonstop until the game finally released. I still have such strong, fond, nostalgic memories for that game

We actually had about SIX basketball games even if some people didn't acknowledge them much.

Man sad times

Not arguably it was! Madden 06 to madden 12... Heck I would say the entire 360 generation of madden was awful. Last year was the first madden since original Xbox I had overly enjoyed.

That NBA 2K7 demo was and forever will be stuck in my brain. I played it so damn much. That year in fact was an amazing year of demos because I also played the NHL one a ton because of the new controls. One of my oldest articles starts with an ode to that NBA 2K7 demo though.

So yeah, 2006 was the year of the demo.

Bro I remember how hype I was for 2k7 on Xbox 360. That was the introduction of signature styles. I can't believe that was ten years ago.

Yeah, there were quite a few basketball games in 2006. Here's a few of the OS reviews I didn't include in the article...

NBA Ballers: Phenom (Apr 26, 2006, Xbox)
NBA Ballers: Rebound (Jul 25, 2006, PSP)
Total College Basketball (Apr 19, 2006, PC)

I remember being blown away by the sweat on the players. Haha. Some great memories from 2k6 and 2k7.

I thought Madden 10 was super good.

Madden 11 was an embarrassment. Literally just like font changes.

Microsoft had just cancelled their Inside Drive series
NBA 07
NBA 2K7
NBA Live 07
NBA Street Homecourt
March Madness 07
College Hoops 2K7

Street Homecourt & March Madness were both early '07 releases as far as I'm aware.

Still, '06 was a packed year.

HAHA whoops... I think I posted the wrong year, but those were definitely all there too.

It's sad man, I hate it. Sony bowed out at the wrong time too.

Looking at these screenshots, it's funny how little the graphics have progressed in ten years. Obviously, the new games dominate in close-up shots, but from afar, there really is not too much difference. Whereas, take 1996 sports title and compare to 2006, and well, it's like an oil painting vs. a photograph.

I wish I played soccer games back then so I can see why everyone still claims PES 6 is the greatest soccer game of all time. Man I hope PES 2017 finally put this game to rest.

It's really been that long huh? 10 years ago was the first time I played the crap out of a 2K basketball, NBA 2K7. Played 2K6 but nowhere near as much as 2K7. Crazy it's been that long already lol all the change within that 10 year period.

Better times. Much better times.
